As a long time USAA member I found having my airport car on a separate policy w Geico to be a better deal than keeping w/ usaa. I was very forthright with both geico & usaa reps about the airport car, my family cars at home, where it was to be kept and the infrequency of use. Both provided quotes, on multiple options.

My problem is my home state requires you to have it inspected every two years, in person, in my home state's inspection lane. Thus, I have to drive it 1000 miles one way every two years just to get it inspected and renew the tag.
What I'm looking to do is buy a car near MEM and register it in TN or MS. Currently my pad is in MS, but I could change that.
In Shelby County, there are 5 cities that have their own City Fee, and the fees vary. Additionally, Memphis requires a vehicle inspection. If not for the Proof of Residency requirement, most people would claim to be in unincorporated Shelby County where the rates are lowest.
Memphis has the highest City Fee at $30. Collierville is close behind at $27. Bartlett, Millington, and Germantown charge $25, and all other areas of Shelby County have no city fee.
The Registration Fee of $24, Title Fee of $13, and Wheel Tax of $50 brings the total to $117 in Memphis, $114 in Collierville, $112 in Bartlett, Millington, and Germantown, and $87 everywhere else. Those are the fees for initial registration; the annual renewal fees are $11 less.
Two proofs of residency are required, and you can find the complete list of acceptable documents online. Among them are current rental contract fully signed and executed, and current automobile insurance policy.
Once you have registered your vehicle, you can renew the registration on-line, and you can even sign up for reminder e-mails so you won't forget. Just remember the new registration with the sticker that goes on the license plate will be mailed to the address of your residence. If you change your residence, you'll need to provide new Prrof of Residency documents.

My home state requires a car inspection every year and an emission test every two years.
However, my County Personal Property Tax form has a box to check for "Garaged Out of State."
Over the past 15 years I've had 3 different airport cars in MEM (registered in my home state) that never received the state mandated inspections. I recently drove one of them home. The next week I took it for the required inspections ... no problem.
Are you sure this is a problem for you?

It sounds like registering a car in MS is the easiest way to go.

In my county/state (NC), they allow me to get my car inspected elsewhere and bring the form back to NC. I have a 90 day window prior to my tags expiration date to get this done. In the past, I would go to the free emissions testing stations in Memphis, even though my truck was exempt from emissions, and get the required safety inspection. Last year I learned that they closed all of those emissions testing stations, so I went to an oil change station in Southaven that does MS state inspections. This year, I had it done in NC while I was home for 6 months on medical leave/LTD.
