car regisration in mem
About to acquire a commuter car in mem, and recall hearing gouge on the pros/cons of registering/tags etc, in mem, outlying counties, in MS, or back in home state.
Anyone have the word on the "best" way.
Thanks in advance

You have to have a Memphis license and address. Keep it registered in your home state.

In TN, the emissions test is a local requirement that applies to the city of Memphis (cars older than 2009)
The person that I spoke to on the phone stated that they required a doctor's bill, or other official correspondence sent to the address that I was claiming. She specifically would not accept an affidavit from the person that I was renting from.
The state of NC requires an annual "inspection". They accepted a receipt from Jiffy Lube showing that the car was serviced in lie of an inspections and they let me renew the expired registration by mail.
Check engine means that its working, right?

I wouldn't suggest you register your car in Mississippi unless you want to pay personal property taxes in it. My 10 year old truck cost me $118 for 2012. Don't even ask about the Jag!

The olive branch po-po patrol the usual crash pad locales searching for out of state plates. I have heard of some vehicles being ticketed although I can not confirm this crash pad rumor from personal experience. If I had a crash pad I would register my airport vehicle using tha address.

Actually, if it's over 10 yr old, the tax goes away. We pay a flat $35 for my kid's 14 yr old Rover. Since Memphis tags are close to $100 after all the wheel taxes and extras, it's not a bad deal. Plus the tax portion of the car tag is deductible from your Fed taxes. (for all our other vehicles.)

Yea, MS. is great for older cars. Also, no lines anytime you enter the Panola court house to do any legal stuff. In and out in less than 10 minutes. Memphis can cost you several hours!
