Lucky for him UPS will not be hiring for years to come so he will most likely get picked up by a normal company.

What point am I missing? I'm all for extracting as much from the company as possible via contract negotiations but there are advantages to having some efficiencies that the competition doesn't have. If you want the IPA to negoiatate that into your next contract then by all means have them do so, but if the company wants something in return what are you willing to give up?

FYI -- If FDX needs to get a pilot somewhere, and there are no commercial flights leaving soon enough to get him there in time...The FDX CBA allows the company to put that pilot on a company aircraft J/S.

It's certainly not the norm. But, in Commando's scenario above, that's most likely what they would do.

Because of the gracious hospitality of UPS crews in the last two months I've ridden on a 744, 744BCF, MD-11, 767, and 757. Given Commando's ANC-HKG example I'd choose riding any of the above save the 767/757 vs transiting commercial via the west coast. Does that make me a management stooge? Personally I think it just means I'd rather another day at home rather than spending another day on the road.

I've also been on a FedEx 777 and MD-11. The 777 was pretty sweet but given a choice I'd take a Brown Mad Dog over a Purple one.

The catering is rather, um, functional, I'll grant you that. Still not worth spending a day on the road for vs at home.

How do you figure you'll get more time at home, if the pay is based on trip rig?

So Tallflyer let me get this straight, you would rather jumpseat on company acft and get paid for a one days work rather then like Fred go down to San Fran, Layover and then go to HKG and get paid for three days worth of work???. Sometimes we are own worst enemy!

You'll have to forgive my ignorance on trip rigs. I still drive TSIO-540s for a living.

If the scenario works out as Shaggy described then I absolutely see your point. Can we get both and just make everybody happy?

You do not get another day at home.

A trip rig is the ratio of hours paid to a pilot to the hours away from base or domicile. For example, a 1:3.5 trip rig means that for every 3.5 hours away from base, the pilot will be credited with one hour of pay.

The point you are missing is you're getting less pay, no extra time off AND less pilots behind you on the seniority list because of the "convienence" of living in ANC and using company jumpseats. Think about what you're saying.

If you still don't get it, then just trust us and do everybody a favor by keeping your mouth shut when you get hired on somewhere.

Just skimming some of the articles on the main page and it's starting to click. I assume you're paid the better of block time, duty or trip rig?
