As a fellow commuter from ATL there are two wide body jets that leave ATL around 10:30 and 11:30 each night M-F. There is also a wide body jet that leaves each morning Tuesday-Saturday. There is a Sunday afternoon flight from Mem-ATL. However nothing in the morning on Sunday from ATL-MEM.

I am currently on a trip that left Mem for Colone on a Monday morning am launch. After reading Grones's latest email I elected to J/S into Memphis on a Saturday morning. Got a hotel the first night, and spent the second afternoon in the crew room sleep area. Can't say I was any more rested than had I J/S in on a Sunday morning.

I wonder how many will now drive to Memphis from ATL, etc. and show up exhausted instead of rested.

Why would you let him intimidate you like that? Waste a whole day in MEM plus eat the cost of a hotel, all for what? The same level of restfulness you would have gotten coming in Sunday.

If you do what flight management wants every MEM AM launch wipes out a minimum of 8-12 hours of the day before getting "rested" for work.

This is time not lost by our day flying brethren since they can sleep when everybody else does.

Gee, I guess because I'd rather not get pulled off a 50-70 CR trip and have to figure out how I'm going to make it up.

I think the point was....

Jumpseating in on Sunday AM for a Monday AM departure gives plenty of time to be fully rested and ready with the opportunity for more than 16 hours of rest before flying. (I always come in the day before an operational leg on the 777)

Coming in on Saturday for a Monday trip is overkill..

IMO..

And there we have the desired management effect: pilots running scared.

... and tired.

Correct me if I am wrong but can't you buy an airline ticket to MEM with your bank and that doesn't count as duty time? The drawback is the IRS counts it as "taxable income"!

Ask the FAA, they will tell you, Jumpseating into MEM does not count as duty time either!

no need to ask the FAA, it is in our CBA:

The provisions of Section 26.J.2. are predicated upon the
premise that time spent on a pilot scheduled Company
jumpseat is not accrued duty time under this contract or the
FARs. Should the Company be required to consider time spent
on a pilot scheduled Company jumpseat as accrued duty time,
Section 26.J.2., shall become null and void immediately.
