Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...
When a monthly bid award is finished and all the hard lines, VTO lines and reserve lines are awarded....and there are still a few pilots left at the bottom without an award...then they will be awarded reserve lines that are duplicates of a reserve line already published in the bid pack
The schedulers cannot, and do not, just make up a new, unique reserve line
In effect, 2 pilots end up being awarded the exact same reserve line (...neither in a Pay Only status)

I finished training after the next months bid was released, so because I was still in training, I was unable to bid for the upcoming month, which happened to be December. To make matters worse, I was the number LAST pilot in the left seat of the Mad Dog. I expected to be hammered, expecting to work both Christmas and New Years. Unbelievably, I was awarded a reserve line that worked from Dec 2nd straight through Dec 16th (I believe.) There were no reserve lines in the December bid pack that worked those specific days. I didn't think much about it, but a few months later a friend asked me how I got those days back in December. It never dawned on me to question the process, as like anyone else who would have gotten those days, I just thanked my lucky stars and continued about my business.
So I'm not sure you're correct in your supposition.

Jetjok,
Your situation involves a Custom Line. What DLax is talking about is a situation as if you had finished your training before the bid closed. You wouldn't have been in the bid pack for the MD. So now you're an extra body bidding for the next month. Now there aren't enough lines for everyone who is bidding in that seat.

How's that "build your own line" working out for the guys getting trips thru the VTO process?
What makes us assume the R day process would be any better...or any more more transparent?
Additionally, the intent of VTO lines was for guys to get TRIPS, but in many seats the bottom half get ALL R-days
The company uses this as their "clean up" / "back stop" to give themselves scheduling flexibility thru Reserve lines they define just before the bid month starts
It lacks both definitive pilot control from the published bidpack and transparency
