I don't know if you are sarcastic or naive. He is part of Corporate America, that looks at employees as cheap labor that can be replaced. Not easily in WG case but Jim doesn't seem to care. A bunch of MD-11s with no GPS, ACARS, SAT phones or sleeping quarters and a bunch of MELs. It's been a year, he could have made it at least good by now that would make people stay.
It's not about successful company for him, it's money!!! He'll sell it in 5-7 years.

I just couldn't look myself in the mirror if I knew I had the opportunity to provide a bunch of hard working Americans with a great job and I still chose to keep wages low and working conditions difficult just so that I could die with a few more million in the bank. Like I said, it's a shame.

Suspension of disbelief? Check. You've got that part nailed.
You're working for the Neffs.
Been there, done that.
Example: APU? Screw it. Don't need it. Call it a "crew convenience" item and let the bastards roast...
Well, at least in the MD you can open a window. In the Whale we only had the chimney up top. In America you'd go to jail if you left your dog in your car with temperatures we suffered through in Africa on a daily basis while loading cargo.
With the Neffs? Bidness as usual.
To be fair, slimy as they are, at least they knew how to generate business. Something their successors (still) can't figure out. So you can at least rest assured your paycheck will arrive on time. Your soul will be left feeling empty, hollow, violated and dirty, but you'll be able to shovel plenty of Ramen noodles down that gaping maw.
Gotta hand it to the Neffs. They somehow fooled a lot of people into thinking it's still 2008... Good for them, I guess.
Just remember, the only easy day was yesterday.

It's neither sarcastic or naive. I understand what corporate America is all about, but this is not a huge company that is traded publicly. This is a small privately owned company and Jim Neff doesn't have to answer to stock owners. The only person he has to answer to is himself. I just don't understand why someone that is that wealthy who isn't a slave to the stock owners chooses to run a company that way. I understand he probably feels like he got burned by the pilots at Southern that sued him, but they won that case for a reason.

Western Global, SkyLease, Southern... All roach hotels. The owners care about one thing, and one thing only; the bottom line. They could literally give a flying frack about you and your co-workers. You are a line item on their expense sheet, nothing more. The closer they can get that number to "zero", the better.
This isn't Corporate America. This is way, way worse. This is "36th Street" Scumbag America. This is "sleazeball Guido used-car salesman/ bail bondsman running an airline" America. Pimps are generally viewed in better light than the types running these companies.
I don't know when your class date is at WN, but if I was in your shoes, I'd spend as much time as possible between now and then not flying. Your certificate is on the line every single time you go to TOGA power on that junker fleet you're flying, way more than even you may realize.

Man, I'm really happy you got the call for Southwest; with that idealistic Pollyanna-like outlook of yours, you're simply not cut out for the scumbag-side of flying. You'd drive yourself crazy trying to figure out why your boss acts the way he does. The fact that he's using a third party to hire you so as to avoid future lawsuits should tell you everything you'll ever need to know about what makes Mr. Neff tick.

I think you've capsulized fairly well the small cargo mentality. I invite you to reexamine that this is the prevailing thought process from most corporate bean counters in all sectors.

Guys like Neff, Ray, Soaper, etc etc, not only do they not give a flying fig about you, they downright despise you.
At least Connie gives it to you straight; "My name's Connie, that's my name on the building, if you don't like how I run things, leave. I'm gonna fcku you sometimes, you're gonna fcku me other times, but we'll both make lots of money in the meantime..." Man might be a son-of-a-*****, but he's up front about it. (Never worked for the guy but this story has been retold countless times)
The other guys? Not only do they not care about you (the pilot) but they'll actually go out of their way to make your situation as miserable as possible, if only to remind you that you work for them.
I dunno. Maybe they weren't hugged enough as children. Maybe they wanted to be pilots themselves but couldn't figure it out. Whatever the case may be, they run their business not only as lean as possible, but also as vindictively as possible, just because they know they have, for the most part, a captive audience, and because they can.
Corporate bean counters generally have a soul. A small one, granted, but it's there. Neff? Soaper? Ray? They run their business in a way that would make a Lincoln Park Pirate give pause, thinking "no, man, that's just going too far."
