Currently planned 550's are retrofits of used airframes. Bombardier sold the CRJ to MHI. MHI is supposed to complete production on any outstanding orders but has no obligation or apparent intent to continue building new CRJs of any sort. MHI bought the CRJ not because they wanted to build it or have anything to do with it... they bought it to get the global support network and customer base which they hope will enable the success of the MRJ (or spicejet or whatever they call it now).

550's should be considered a temporary measure. UAL either hopes to wipe out scope in BK, or maybe hopes that 175s or spicejets can be converted to comply with 50 seat scope. No clear way ahead on any of that.
It’s been quiet on the scope front lately. CARES 2 would support the current status quo right up until the look back period forces reductions. Prudence dictates plans are in place before that occurs. I am not clear on who has the upper hand in this fight. I have long suspected from the absolute silence on the issue that Kirby fully expects scope relief and hasn’t put serious effort into formulating a fleet plan without it.

There wouldnt need to be a reason to manufacture more to cover current flying. OO and YV have enough 700s and 900s to retrofit. YV has already committed 20 to be retrofitted as the 20 ejets come in over the next few months. I suggest listening to YV and OO earning calls coming up next week.

SK has made himself pretty clear that in the long run he only wants luxury 50 seaters (550s). He has stuck to his guns while regional pilots have been delusional to the idea. The 145s and 200s will be obsolete over the next couple years. The reason you just cant get rid of them tomorrow is bc of scope, not contracts. There isnt enough 550s on the line to cover what would be needed based on scope limiting 76/70 seaters on a six month look back.

The assumption that C5 will inherit all of XJTs flying is pretty hilarious. They will get a cut, like everyone else. Most of XJTs flying was in ORD and IAH. Two bases that C5 is not even in. The UA flying in IAH that belonged to XJT is already starting to be divided up between YV and OO.

Your pilot group was staffed to do 10k flight hours. During this pandemic C5 has been doing closer to 2-3k Even with your cut of xjt flying you will not break 8k. And as more 550s are made available they will eat into the 145s flying.

So how about we pump the breaks on the idea of expanding 145s. Especially as we start to role into a recession that will take years to recover from.
Lots of stuff wrong in your post, you clearly don't work for C5.

The preamble says it all, "The Company and the Association agree that furloughed United pilots shall be offered job opportunities at United Express carriers operating jet aircraft with seating capacity in excess of fifty (50) seats under the following conditions:"

So CommutAir simply doesn't fall into that equation. Luckily there is (at least was, unless it's been superseded) an LOA that allowed C5 Aulumni to come back to their previous positions. I'm not quite sue as to the details though.

Also the LOA you keep mentioning is only between UA and their union. That doesn't in anyway make it binding for the UAX carries.

Near-term, sure. Long-term, none of those planes are particularly new, and the 700 does have that after pressure bulkhead issue (maybe it's economical to fix it when they do the conversion?).

Nothing gets me going more than a good back and forward discussion on scope

Anyway......over the next several years what is stopping C5 just swapping aircraft? I don't see the argument behind c55 has 145s....145s may be dead. Ergo c5 IS dead.

Errrrr.... get different aircraft. C5 even has years of prior notice

ooooooh.. so they go to 40 bucks an hour! That’s a real money making raise right there! At least they can be in solidarity with the FOs who are also taking a steep pay cut.

And to the bottom of the seniority list?

What about old c5 pilots? Bottom.of SL.or back.to.old spot?

I don't have a copy of the contract handy but I do know for a fact that C5 pilots can return with prior seniority if they come back within a certain time -- six months rings a bell...not sure if that's correct...might be 90 days. We've had a few come back already when UAL classes were cancelled back in March.

If it's six months.....then they are probably SOL. I thought it was a year.

Other stipulation is that company must be hiring....
