The funny thing is JO said they can meet United’s utilization target by the end of 2024 at the earliest. Will United keep Mesa around till then? Just depends how bad United needs the regional lift. If United didn’t have their own staffing issues they would have probably dumped Mesa faster than Delta and American did.

If Mesa shut their doors today, it’s not like the other regionals can take on any more flying. They’re all coming up short due to lack of captains. I’d expect UAL to prop up who ever needs it for the near term since the alternatives would take too much time.

And pick up most all the pilots if they can.

I honestly don’t think that Mesa is going anywhere, but who exactly would be picking up the pilots if they did? United doesn’t want that many regional airplanes to be suddenly unmanned, nor do they want to wait long enough for someone else to hire and train pilots to take over that flying. They’ll just subsidize who ever they need to in order to keep the planes flying.

Other regionals, with planes parked, would be in position to hire pilots, pick up additional flights that Mesa would leave behind.

(For reference, United has hired twice as many pilots as Mesa has, YTD.)

Other regionals would announce "Preferential Hiring Programs" for DEC's.

There is a clause in the United UPA that says that they are to make reasonable efforts to hire qualified pilots who were represented by ALPA and lost their jobs as well. The point is that United doesn’t want disruptions to their regional lift any more than what the shortage of captains is already causing. They’ll throw money at any regional to keep the status quo chugging on along, especially one that only operates large dual class rj’s.

I was responding to an innuendo that United could not hire all the pilots at Mesa, if Mesa were to collapse.

Per APC (I know it is not perfect), Mesa has about 841 pilots, total. United mainline has been hiring over 200 per month, this year. A few months of hiring would be equal to all the pilots at Mesa.

No aspersions on the Mesa pilots. No guarantee every pilot would be hired. Just looking at numbers, to give us a feel.
