The CASM on it isn’t very good. Add in more expensive fuel and things get worse.

Almost everyone can see it being a failure from day one. Interesting idea though.
Plus how many -700’s are up for grabs with enough life left in them to convert?

According to the FAA, 389 currently registered in the US. A total of 822 were made.

I wonder how many of those would realistically be in play if United wanted as many CRJ 550’s as they could feasibly acquire.

It’s 54 currently with UA eyeing the next 20 700’s at Mesa as they get sat for 175 scope. CASM will certainly be higher than a 700, but then again so will it’s PRASM, not to mention the whole point is to feed the global network so even if it is a loss leader it may be an overall profit increase.

The cost to replace a B-52 with a new purpose-built airframe would be hideous. Cheaper to rehab old bomb trucks.

But airliners need to be fuel/noise/emissions efficient... fleet turnover will be faster in the future than in the past.

United has a contract with Commutair to fly up to 60 145’s and they’re currently at 37. They also have a contract to fly up to 130 145’s at XJT. They only fly around 80 but have 90 or so on property.

That’s 70 50-Seat airplanes right there. The 550 is just a 50 seat stopgap with more room and dual cabins.

It is no threat to UA pilots and their scope leverage.
