So, old guy here, Former Captain at a similar airline in the 80's and 90's. It was normal SOP to get called to fly the right seat occasionally while on reserve. There was no special "right seat Qual " involved, because we had a type rating and FO's did not ... If you have a type rating, you can occupy any seat you choose, because, well, you had the type...
This should work both ways, now that FOs get type ratings ... you're already a Captain, (otherwise, why the type rating) Upgrade for you guys should be like a two day transition thing, involving things like fuel planning, delegation strategies and judgement issues, instead of a whole "'nother type" really?? Sorry for venting, but many developments of the last two decades just seem really silly to me.
Be safe out there.
No forgiveness needed. I believe (and am probably wrong) that type ratings now are being issued to first officers as a product of everyone being required to posses an ATP regardless of seat occupied. This means that individuals coming in without an ATP already in hand are required to some sort of "ride" in order to get it.

As for "upgrade" I think you are spot on about how training should go. It's crazy times my friend.

False.........we are in dire need of pilots. Recruiting is probably just too swamped and have not got back yet.

Thank you very much for the kind words, I do believe many things are harder, or, more difficult now. I got my ATP in 1986 as a "courtesy", easy to do thing, when I went for a Be-99, Instructor, Check Airman ride with the local FSDO. He said: Ohh, you've taken the written, would you like me to sign of on your ATP?" This guy was pure gold and I simply said: yes please". Now, the kids have to take extra courses I understand, instead of just proving the 1500 hours and taking the ride ... Why ???
It was hard back in the day as well, but different, you could still show up, make your way around the patch a few times and get hired to fly a Beech 18 ... best times I ever had, but they appear to have dried up. So I guess Different times, different challenges...

Don't worry they are going to call you if you have what they are loking for. I applied online and they called me the day after. Did my interview 2 weeks later and hired on spot.
So excited to start next week with intro day and then we go from there.
At recruiting event they told us they need to hire at least a pilot a day until the end of 2018. To expect 6 months minimum of reserve.
I live in San Diego so asked for LAX and even if Skywest now has a base in San Diego I have chosen Compass. Will see how will work out, just concerned about traffic for short call....
Good luck

Think about it like this. You may have gotten SAN at OO but to get CA west coast it will take a lot longer. At least at CPZ you are guaranteed to upgrade on the west coast. Hope that makes you feel a little better.

Congrats and welcome aboard! For what it's worth I've been on short call reserve for 6+months and 70% of the time they call me, they have given me well over 3 hours notice. That said, living in SAN you wouldn't be able to make a 2 hour callout. The parking/airport process takes an hour.

Be sure to update us on the indoc class size!

Absolutely and this is why I'm not concern, I just need to figure out how I will handle short call from my house in Encinitas ..... I would love to avoid to travel up to LAX if not needed
