Americans are too dumb to deal with this.
The US has done by far the worst job containing the spread of this disease and will therefore suffer the most. Lots of other countries have significantly slowed the spread and can safely start reopening. We are going to reopen before we see any progress. The United States response to this pandemic is an embarrassment.
Over 60,000 Americas have already died. That's 20X more than 9/11 and more than the entire Vietnam War.... And it only took 3 months!
Our incredibly poor handling of this will ensure that we suffer the most. While other countries go back to normal, we will be floundering. We have already had 5x more cases than anywhere else, and triple the deaths of the next worst country.
But yeah, we should totally protest the stay at home order. Let's see how bad we can make this. Let's all disregard information and rational thought. Let's pretend this is the govt trying to take away your liberty. Let's reopen everything and see if we can kill 100k people by the 4th of July. Let's keep spreading the virus so we can keep our schools closed and planes grounded for a long time! Let's open it up so we can make the problem far worse. Let's open it up and delay the return to normal as long as possible. Let's keep digging this hole deeper! Let's make this political! You know, because the virus cares who you voted for.

Is keeping non obese people at home acceptable? Is forcing them out of their jobs acceptable? Is forcing non-obese kids from school, parks and sports acceptable? There is a very small or even negligible risk of severe COVID-19 disease towards people of healthy weight (all age groups, even seniors).
Is it acceptable to remove the rights and well being of those that aren't effected by this disease? Is it acceptable to voluntarily force the country into an economic depression because of a risk factor that is 100% preventable?
The Mt. Sinai Hospital study from NYC published on April 26th showed the average age of fatalities from COVID-19 was 75-years-old and the average BMI was 32.

No matter how much collectivism is in your soul the risk factors from this disease will not coalesce to your political ideology.
It's good to protect people as much as possible, but modern medicine and society can not be on the hook for risks that are 100% preventable.
I'm hopeful for a rational response to this disease, but I'm guessing that is just too much to ask. I'm of the opinion obesity is a disease, at least partially genetic and not someone's fault, however it is their responsibility.

This is the point of the protests. Many cities and states are long past advice and recommendations and are in mandatory stay at home or lockdown orders. They are required to shutter their business or stay away from their non-essential job. Any government should not have the power to force their populations to stay where the government says to stay. The fate of humanity is not at risk here; only the infirm or medically compromised.
Trust in the media is very low. When there’s that lack of trust in the information being distributed, some are forced to look more closely at what’s going on around them. Since the vast majority of the US population isn’t any where close to or even remotely affected directly by this virus, their own eyes are saying it’s not as bad as they are being led to believe. Personal perception is a big driving factor for these protests.
In the end, the government cannot force compassion onto its citizens (wearing masks for example). At some point the people will do what they need to do to survive and thrive. No politician can stop that for better or worse. There’s also a lack of trust among our neighbors. I choose to assume the person next to me isn’t an idiot and is doing what’s best for him or her. I expect the same in return.

That would be difficult to prove by current figures:
our total rate of people getting coronavirus and of people dying of it are lower than most nations capable of providing reliable public health and vital statistics.
yeah, we are the third most populous country in the world. We are certainly going to have more total cases than many smaller countries, but our rate certainly isn’t worse than most of Western Europe.

Annual FLU deaths are between 20 and 40,000 not 80,000.
And that's for an entire flu season. And that's without social distancing. The Coronavirus has killed the same number of people (or more) as the flu, and it did it in half the time while the entire country was on lockdown!
