When you would cough or sneeze pre covid, would you cough into your hand or shoulder, sneeze into a tissue or something? Unless you are an animal, of course you would; limiting the amount of your snot, phlegm, spit etc going out for others to ingest.
So ill break it down for those with pea sized brains..think of a face mask as a tissue, hand, and shoulder that is attached to your face.
It is common sense, not political.

True, and I am for masks in public, however lets make sure people understand that masks make us more susceptible to colds and viruses generally and should be changed often, cleaned thoroughly, and taken off for fresh air whenever safe to do so.

"To protect droplets from getting into an open wound or stop the wound from infecting the surgeon?"
This isn't surgery. This is a virus killing people with one foot already in the grave. Was the entire country wearing masks for as long as the flu has been around?

You can argue against mask mandates all you want, and I tend to agree that they cause more harm than good. We have the mandates though and they do slow the exhalation of the virus. Tilting windmills is highly unproductive. Take copies of the studies that have been peer reviewed to your local representative and lobby for the mandates to be lifted. Complaining on an internet forum is time well wasted.

Surgeons and nurses performing clean surgery wear disposable face masks. The purpose of face masks is thought to be two-fold: to prevent the passage of germs (large droplets) from the surgeon's nose and mouth into the patient's wound and to protect the surgeon's face from sprays and splashes from the patient.
CV19 droplets (very small)easily pass through normal masks (surgical, cloth, etc)... only N95 masks have shown ability to reduce, not eliminate, CV 19 droplets.

Germany is having a very normal rhinovirus season. With mandatory masking in place since May, this should be impossible if the masks actually worked.
The airlines are only doing it to CYA. And pushing away badly needed customers in the process. Both management and my union are well aware of my views. Both shrug and say, "we can't do anything about it now." They've gone all in on the masking with no end game.
Meanwhile employees are arguing with each other, employees are arguing with passengers, passengers are arguing with other passengers. Great fun. Flights are getting canceled or delayed. Every return to gate is gleefully reported by the media.
Fortunately I'm eligible for early retirement. Is this the hill I'm willing to die on? I'm starting to think so.

Not surprising considering that isn't what an N95 is intended to do. The N95 mask is designed for people to wear in contaminated environments to protect the wearer, like when doing mold abatement, or fiberglass insulation removal. That is why most N95 masks have a valve, because they are not worried about what you are breathing out, and it allows you to evacuate more CO2 rich air, then seals back when inhaling. The N95 (along with every other mask being worn right now) is not designed to trap and filter viruses being exhaled from the wearer. The valve usually touts 30% cooler operation, while lowering CO2 inhalation, while still providing the intended protection for the wearer.
