Default Jumpseat Priority and Etiquette on Connection

I was jumpseating home a few days ago and wanted by the gate probably about 2 hours before departure time. When the gate agent opened the flight, I asked for the jumpseat, etc. She stated that another mainline pilot had it reserved already. I was the only and first one at the flight , so this surprised me. This was on a Republic flight.

When the other pilot showed up, he said he had another gate agent list him about 5 hours earlier. I have never heard of this, but whatever.

Is this the way it works and if so, is it that way for all the connection carriers, Endeavor, Skywest, etc?

Thanks

Yes pretty much... the list of jumpseat priority is in the FOM I believe. Other than on a mainline flight it's pretty much who can list first. Delta pilots do have higher priority on an Endeavor flight(as they do with us) than others.

I guess I should re-phrase my question. I understand it's first come, first serve. But is going to another gate/help desk hours before departure time an accepted practice?

Scenario: 5 pilots in line at a gate for the jumpseat. The last guy walks over to the adjacent gate, which has no line, and lists for jumpseat there. That pilot now has priority. Yes, not a cool move, but whats the difference?

In the situation you mention above it's bad etiquette. I would have words with the person involved. In your specific situation there is nothing wrong with getting listed before that gate is opened for the flight. I often list at the ticket counter or quarterpoints hours before a flight.

Is there a maximum time before departure time that one can list, now that I know that is available?

As early as you can find someone willing to list you. Same day would be my guess.

Have you ever gone up to the gate and found it to be an absolute charlie fox? I have, and have walked over to one of the service counters to have them list me (ORD come to mind). And to the person that said he would "have words" with this pilot just trying to get home GMAFB.

I agree with you in most circumstances. The exception would be when there are pilots waiting in the line at the CF gate in question, and you "cut" the line by getting another gate agent to do it for you. Thats a blue falcon move for sure. But there's nothing inherently wrong with listing at another counter or at ticketing especially if you're there early and you know there won't be anyone at the gate to even do it. In that case you truly did "get there first" and its fair and reasonable to list early (I think its up to 4 hours?) and completely unreasonable to expect someone who is there that early anyway to stand number one at an empty counter for 3+ hours so they can say they were first to someone who walks up 3 hours after they were there.

Agent is SLC told me 6 hours in advance. As a D.C. pilot I've also been beat to the jump at an empty gate. Maybe enable listing for all jumps on DL/DC and let the computer sort it out is the answer?
