Those 60 Captains (10 of which are at at the top of the pay food chain) and 16 FOs at the top of the FO pay food chain are going to be kicked out of their position (either mandatorily or voluntarily - MD/VD) which means 10 DTW B777 Captains, 16 DTW B777 FOs and 50 ATL M88 Captains will have to pick a new category to move to based on what their seniority can hold (for mandatory displacements) or what the seniority of the junior pilot whose displacement they are volunteering to take can hold (VD).
In theory, there could be a significant trickle down effect from those 10 777 Captains being surplused and displaced out of the DTW B777 category but, in reality, Crew Resources probably will accept some excess in other categories not slated to close in order to minimize training events and thus minimize second and third order displacements (i.e., B777 Capt displaces to B765 which displaces a B765 Captain to the B7ER which displaces a B7ER Captain to the B73N, etc...).
Clear as mud? 🤔

The company is going to shrink the number of required pilots in the DTW B777 category by 10 Captains and 16 FOs as well as 50 Captains from the ATL M88 category. Therefore, those categories are now deemed to have a surplus of those respective numbers and thus the company will, through this bid, displace/remove/reduce the respective categories by no more than the posted numbers.

Great explanation! Thanks, so next question(s) do the displaced captains (if no one volunteers) come from the bottom of the seniority list and 2nd, can they go to whichever base they want to displace other Capts lower in seniority. Example...say 10 displaced capt from ATL M88, want 320 Capt out of NYC. The AE doesn't say Anything about 320 Capt positions being open in NYC, but since they are being displaced, can they then choose whichever base (in this example NYC) and displace the bottom 10 Capt s off the 320 out of NYC.

it was very junior but at the same time what a fun opportunity.

None of the 50 bottom ATL 88 Captains can hold anything else as Captain, MAYBE a few can hold NYC 717. If a senior guy wants to try to voluntary displace he would only get the bidding power of those at the bottom that he would be taking the displacement from allowing them to stay. So basically unless the company wants to add these Captains to other Captain categories they better get ready to swing gear again.

Newer pilots have never seen backwards displacements here.

Agreed. This is why it went so junior to begin with. I didn’t want to be reserve or a weekend line holder knowing the category is going to start shrinking until I get displaced. Most guys who have been here more than 10 years feel the same way.
