Some are calling the A330-900 the new MD11. Take a almost 40 year old airframe and update it. Sales have been abysmal no matter how Airbus tries to spin it. On flights under 2000 miles there is no fuel savings over the CEO A330.

Are you kidding? Delta has more money than it knows what to do with. Hence the stock buybacks, etc. One of the reasons why Delta has the best balance sheet in the business is because they don't overspend on airplanes. They keep their planes longer and when buying, will go with whoever offers the most bang for the buck. Bastian has said he's interested in being the launch customer for the 797, but you can bet that it's only if the price is right.

I’ve heard the initial cadre on the 350 did a really poor job with the program and made it much more difficult than it needs to be.

1) Pilots coming from 20+ years on "the Whale" and never having been through an AQP training program much less any initial qual program in the last 15-20 years; and/or
2) Those pilots not having flown Airbus before; and/or
3) Some being torqued that they didn't get awarded a training bypass and therefore "rage quit" which didn't help to make for a conducive training environment either.
Granted the initial A330 to A350 footprint was a bit aggressive but hey, I guess you gotta start somewhere.
In the end, the 350 is just another Airbus with an integrated EFB and much nicer displays (but a relatively low MTOGW that restricts its range).

I don't think it was the initial cadre making it difficult but rather:
1) Pilots coming from 20+ years on "the Whale" and never having been through an AQP training program much less any initial qual program in the last 15-20 years; and/or
2) Those pilots not having flown Airbus before; and/or
