I heard that there is talk of opening the 320 base in LAX with minimal crews to start the 6 month clock ticking on a new base. This would subsequently open the door allowing for breaking seat locks - new category.
I understand that the company wants to minimize training but this would only work if the next big AE was more than 6 months down the road. If there is a MOAB in April or May it would still be a new category?
I don't know what to think about this rumor but, I see it as a CR technique in the future used to minimize Pilots breaking seat locks. Any contract Ninjas know if we have some sort of PWA protection against this sort of contractual end around?

It’s only a new category for 60 days, not 6 months. I’m curious if it’s not a new category, would a MD get it vs. an AE even if the AEer is senior? My guess is yes and that’s why they’d do it, to minimize training. The more LAX 717 they can get to bid LAX 320 without other pilots being able to bid in the less “catastrophic” the big bid would be. Just a guess. I’m not an expert.

Well, now its making sense. If its only a new category for 60 days I also think they will do it.
Sailing - its not a small category, it would just start off will a small bid. After 60 days they do a bigger bid and it does not count as a new category. I don't see this costing the company anything, no ones seat lock is being extended either it just will not let people break current locks.
I also don't see training and simulators as a big issue - its a new category for DAL, not a new air frame.
Anyway we will know soon enough.

The company is very good at exploiting the PWA when they so choose, I have no doubt they would open a very small fraction of a category in order to get the new category status clock ticking and then fully man it 61+ days later. There is plenty of capacity in the 320 training pipeline which could handle a large influx down the road. That said there is a silver lining for a few pilots -- such a move would likely benefit current LAX717 pilots who would have less competition from AE'ers if they MD over to the 320.

I suppose they could but that would be an open declaration of war, doesn't seem very prudent. Much more advantageous to open with 20 slots and make up some bs excuse how they are "seeding" the base.
