VBs reduce credit (that's why the company might be interested in the option). Credit reductions mean fewer front and back end DHs from which commuters can deviate. Credit reductions mean more hard time flying instead of getting paid (due to rigs) more than just one's hourly rate. Credit reductions mean fewer jobs... not just fewer new hires, but fewer bodies needed in the categories one aspires to hold. That translates to delayed upgrades and stagnation or even regression backwards in your current category. Smaller bid packs in the bases from which VB flying was pulled means a lower likelihood that each pilot can find something he or she likes to bid on and less variety overall.
The company can open all the real bases it wants to. Then pilots can bid corresponding categories with some confidence that it might persist for a while. And if there's some off- or shoulder season inefficiency (credit) associated with it, almost everyone (with some exceptions) wins with better qol.
Don't be fooled that VBs are in the interest of the majority of pilots on our list. Even many of those (local) pilots positively affected pilots understand the bigger-picture negatives.
