New Hire Class Drops

Yeah.. For me, short call is assigned on the same timeline as a trip, for 9 hours. So (barring odd gotcha situations) you got 12 hours notice to have a bag packed and be ready to go. Today, I'm just working on christmas light programming, so I can hit save on the computer, take five minutes to change and get in the truck and drive to the airport. (I don't live where I can sit SC at home, but we will pretend I live 2 hours away)
Huge tunnel blocking accident? Well **** happens. I could normally make it in normal traffic in 2 hours. I'm fine, if they call I will just tell them as such. They will scream/yell, hell I was in a cab in 15 minutes headed to EWR (was sitting in crash pad next to JFK) and 2 hours later I was still on Staten Island.. Traffic happens. I could have walked to JFK in 20 minutes. They can yell all they like. I was in position.
Call me to go to LGA during peak rush hour (1200-2100 short call) sitting it over in Philly, well within 2 hours on EWR. Eat a duck, I'll be there when I can safely be there. If you approve expensed in close parking, I can be there sooner.
Promptly available.. FWIW, I would not use an air commute to sit short call. I don't have the SRH, FOM and PWA handy, but I think there was something about no air transport, but I cant remember if that's a policy, suggestion or nothing.

Yeah OK. I should have left out the 24/7 thingy. But roll the dice and see how many times showing up 3 hours after you get short called in SLC (on non snow days) will work for you. I'm just saying that if you live 2 hours away, you better be ready to go when that call comes as you don't have time to mess around.... especially on probation

I have heard from a DAL pilot that you can’t be assigned more that 8 short call periods in a month. Is this true? How often do the low seniority people get assigned short call? Is the 8 short call reserve limit a mute contract point because everyone low on the list is assigned trips to fill up their reserve availability? I’m just looking for some experience to guide my expectation management.

Thank you for that information. While it does throw a wrench in my future short call plans it is still very doable. I’ll just have to find something to do between the house and ATL. Talladega has a pretty good 1000m range. It’s not for golfing but it would let me knock the rust off of the skills I developed during my misspent youth; before I started driving Blackhawks for Uncle Sugar.

Just want to clarify for everyone following along with the SC / air commute posts…
If you have been assigned SC, you absolutely can commute in, even via air, to be in position for SC, and you can even do it during the first two hours of the SC assignment. You just have to notify Scheds that you will be unavailable for contract during the firs two hours.
What you can not do, is be sitting at your commute airport while on SC and if assigned a rotation, jump on a plane to then commute in within the “2-ish” hours.

In a slightly different vein, it's not a bad strategy to try and yellow slip one or two short calls to get them out of the way and to take a crack at either the early window or late window, depending on your own preferences and fleet peculiarities. Talk to others in your BES and they can give you the best read on the pulse of how reserve assignments work for your situation and then you adjust from there.

In over 9yrs of (reserve about 25% of the time to perfectly control schedule) I've only had over 2 short calls in the same month twice, and both of those months it was 3.
Ive actually had many more months of NO short calls than even 2 in the same month.
Just one anecdotal evidentiary point.

There is also a scheduling provision whereas after 2 short calls, they have to assign it to others (within same buckets, so not an exact science) before they can assign you a third.
