If you have been assigned SC, you absolutely can commute in, even via air, to be in position for SC, and you can even do it during the first two hours of the SC assignment. You just have to notify Scheds that you will be unavailable for contract during the firs two hours.

What you can not do, is be sitting at your commute airport while on SC and if assigned a rotation, jump on a plane to then commute in within the “2-ish” hours.
Not only that you can commute in on your SC time, you can also call skeds and get released to commute home with 2hrs left in the 9hr window, so a SC can just mean go to base for 5or so hours for the day if you get a SC window that is commutable.

You can, if the scheduler allows it. I had infamous (John) tell me, "no, you used your two hours at the beginning of the SC, I'm not going to release you early."
It cost me an extra night in a hotel.

Ive spent many hours staring out the window of the JFK and LGA Skyclubs with this exact arrangement.

That's why no matter what even if I'm at the airport in uniform. I tell them I'll be there in 2 hours. They don't do favors for me so I just fly the contract.

Yep. Assigned short call, call them to tell them I will be uncontactable and if they ask which airport (JFK Normally) I tell them the one most convienient for me. Of course, they give me a EWR "how soon can you be there" and then if they offer to send a cab, I'll take it. Otherwise the contractual EWR cab amount doesn't cover it most days, so off to the A train I go. I'll be there in 3-4 hours.

What's "using your two hours at the beginning?" All that you are informing them is that your "uncontactable" as you commute to the airport, with the understanding that in some point in that 2 hrs of SC you'll be in the airport ready to go.

That's bad luck, cause I literally have used this technique about 50 times over the last 9 yrs at different periods when I've bid reserve and have never been denied the early release. I have been put on Sked hold for nearly an hour once and nearly missed my commute flight home, but they answered at the last minute. Sometimes I'll call 3 out and ask about a flight leaving just before the 2hrs and they just release me then, especially if they have already assigned flying to me for the next day.
