Honestly with a 2 hour drive, I would not even air commute.

If you can be at the airport in two hours from your house (may have to pay for short term if tight) I would have zero qualms sitting short call at home.

Bad info, There is NO reference to 2 hours in the PWA or scheduling reference handbook. If you’re not going to give correct info, please refrain from commenting.

2 hours is not written anywhere, but it is understood as the rule of thumb. Let’s just days it’s a good measuring stick. Inside 2 hours is golden. Outside you are starting to speed a little. How much? Up to you.

As in I said I would have zero qualms about it. Promptly available which has been stated multiple places isn't contractually defined but if my house was 2 hours to I am parked in short term parking I would have zero issue sitting short call at home. Bag packed able to be out the door in 10 minutes is fine at that range.

What would be harder is if I was say a 4 hour no traffic drive from Meridian. That woukd be harder to defend. Two hours no traffic easy to defend.

I never stated its a contract limit. I just stated with a 2 hour drive I'd be fine sitting at home. No idea how much of a clown show and time suck employee parking is at ATL but in NYC any "asap" short call I've been approved for short term parking. Which saves me a half hour in at JFK.

Hold on, there Boog. You overread what he said. He didn’t say the PWA said 2 hours, just responded to a specific post that if his/her drive was less than that the poster was ok.

Plus, you would have to be within spitting distance of your car, packed and ready to go on a moment's notice basically 24/7. In other words, if you live 2 hours away and get a short call assignment, it is too late to have lunch, take a shower/shave/pack and jump in the car heading towards the ATL: It would be "I'm on my way", walk to the garage, start the car and drive out. And if I lived two hours away, I wouldn't be out on the back nine while I 'm on short call either... but that's probably just me. jmho, ymmv.

What airline do you work for? I work for a 121 carrier where 24/7 short call not only isn't a thing but where our policy wouldn't make it as bad as you imply to be 2 hrs away.

Yeah.. For me, short call is assigned on the same timeline as a trip, for 9 hours. So (barring odd gotcha situations) you got 12 hours notice to have a bag packed and be ready to go. Today, I'm just working on christmas light programming, so I can hit save on the computer, take five minutes to change and get in the truck and drive to the airport. (I don't live where I can sit SC at home, but we will pretend I live 2 hours away)

Huge tunnel blocking accident? Well **** happens. I could normally make it in normal traffic in 2 hours. I'm fine, if they call I will just tell them as such. They will scream/yell, hell I was in a cab in 15 minutes headed to EWR (was sitting in crash pad next to JFK) and 2 hours later I was still on Staten Island.. Traffic happens. I could have walked to JFK in 20 minutes. They can yell all they like. I was in position.

Call me to go to LGA during peak rush hour (1200-2100 short call) sitting it over in Philly, well within 2 hours on EWR. Eat a duck, I'll be there when I can safely be there. If you approve expensed in close parking, I can be there sooner.

Promptly available.. FWIW, I would not use an air commute to sit short call. I don't have the SRH, FOM and PWA handy, but I think there was something about no air transport, but I cant remember if that's a policy, suggestion or nothing.

Correct. Ground transportation only. For example, LAS commuters to LAX could feasibly get to LAX faster than a ground transport pilot. But specifically verboten for SC.

Easy there, speed racer. Something tells me you’re that guy who tells scheduling you’ll be there in an hour then shows up 3 hours later!
