It was true but it isn’t true any longer. Whether it be due to delivery delays or training saturation United will not be hiring 200+ a month for the foreseeable future.

At a previous carrier, open time at the first PCS run had to be 80% blue. Yet we have 5 blue days in my category at 0700 on the 20th.
I don't see how hiring more magically fixes this issue with the way things currently work. The first PCS run will just have a some more blue and a few more super senior guys will be able to drop their whole schedules. Great, now we're back to all black days by the noon PCS run. One occasional one off blue days here and there.

Their hiring was revised to 1,600 for 2026. Maybe they’ll hire the last 10,000 pilots in 2029 to have 30,000 pilots by 2030… Their January classes are already short of what was planed like every year.

There are several issues to address, but the most significant one is the company's decision to pre-post rest periods on all RES schedules before the first PCS run. This practice destroys coverage and negatively impacts the quality of life for everyone. If 80% of the month was blue, even middle-of-the-road senority could adjust their schedules more freely. This would allow senior pilots who drop their "good trips" to leave opportunities for junior pilots to pick up and or swap. With adequate staffing, there would be more blue opportunities for everyone.

Have you tried being in a non poorly manned category (I'm joking/sarcasm)

JAN 3rd is the only non blue day next month after a few PCS cycles. Some have 3-4X required RES up there. The only black day, is 20 REQ/20 AVAIL

must be nice. I haven’t been able to swap or drop a trip since last spring. Sure a blue day here and there but it’s feeling like a regional with how understaffed we are and the bandaid is to just throw money at it and let deal makers deal.

I am 100% certain the deal makers will get a stern talking to.

Just spoke to a captain that's numero uno on his fleet. He drops his schedule and puts slips in for 23m. Only flies greenies with a beach layover. That's the strategy of the top dawgs, bringing black days for all

Exactly. So hire more pilots = more reserves (blue days) on the 20th at 0659 = a few more too dawgs do this = more of the same sh!t....

To be fair, as number one in category, I’d bet he actually gives most of his trips away on the swap board, and has a clean schedule before the 20th PCS run even happens.

But I get your point. Somebody, at some level, is dropping trips driving the matrix black…
