Default Taking the Plane from the Captain

Between age 67 and 6 month captains flying 767s through hail, it begs the question, has anyone had to take the airplane from the CA?

I had an incident a few days ago where the CA decided to click off the a/t in gusty conditions, vref was around -10 kts at ‘50 feet, resulting in a near tail strike.

thoughts??

Unless I’m worried he’s gonna kill me, i just speak in my loudest and clearest voice and say, “i don’t think that’s a good idea captain.” That way I’m covered during the NTSB investigation.

The only time it would be appropriate to take the airplane is if he's doing something unsafe and not correcting the error. In your case, it would have been appropriate to "airspeed. Airspeed. Go around." If he didn't go around, if the aircraft is in an unsafe condition, take the airplane.

A choice between lose your job or lose your life. If there isn’t a very high probability of the latter just make sure your objections can be clearly heard on the CVR.

I'm curious to know how the conversation afterwards went. Was the CA thankful you spoke up when you saw something potentially unsafe? What was the tone?

when he is not responding to my "strong suggestions" and/or I think he has some sort of medical event impacting his mental or physical status, in the middle of a dynamic and rapidly changing situation.

cruise flight in VMC is different than intercepting the approach course to an airport at minimums or the takeoff roll as he drifts off centerline and refuses to say "checked" when I call 80 knots

The words "Go Around" should have been said by you. And if not complied with by the Captain a call to professional standards should have been made.

Lose your job? Don't be dramatic. You can't be fired for acting in the best interest of safety no matter how hurt the other person's ego. Additionally they can't use the CVR in this instance either.

LoL nice troll post. "I had an incident" then "vref -10 at 50ft" then the real kicker "resulting in a near tail strike". First of all, how did you know it was "resulting in a near tail strike"? I mean this post is laughable on so many levels and the fact it will most likely run 100+ posts is pretty much guaranteed. must be a slow day.

Two words need to be used, if you are uncomfortable or deem continuing to land is a safety issue with no need to "take the airplane from the Captain" - GO AROUND.
