I hated doing that stuff especially with weather. You are really on your own and more than once I was within a single transmission of flying off altitude and deviating on my own. I always deviated east to maybe get some VHF data from ACARS around Bermuda. I don't miss playing the telephone game with ARINC over HF voice with everyone transmitting. SELCAL was not fun either because you never knew if you still had connectivity even though you tested with every change. I ended up monitoring old school because I didn't trust being out there with a single radio that was mostly inaudible.

We had a medical event years ago and had to use HF to contact Dispatch and Stat-MD (pre MedAire.) What an unnecessary cluster.

But, at least we didn't inconvenience Tech Ops.

Jump on that Long Distance Operational Control Freq and start working the phone patch to ATL radio. Fun times - not.

Along the lines of Write-up: "Autoland seems inop." Mx corrective action: "Autoland not installed."

Post MedAire I've had that issue over the Pacific due to no Viasat. Satcom not working either. HF phone patch to the rescue.

You haven't lived til you've done that at night over sub-saharan Africa! Making reports in the blind to (hopefully) nobody approaching waypoints on airways.

As it relates to Delta, I was surprised when I started to WATRS flying here that we never got the SATCOM airplane. At least I knew how to make a proper position report before I got here. Cause it sure is funny to listen to everyone else try!
