Yeah, some of the most diehard “I’ll only live in base”, anti-commuting pilots I’ve ever met are now commuters due to changes in life or company circumstances.
At a minimum, commuter policies are insurance policies for every pilot on the list. This is the contract cycle that needs to raise our current clause from industry worst to industry leading. And that’s before selling any auto-accept leverage. |
I've said this before but here are some key improvements needed (as an overall part of section 6, not directly tied to any 23m7 costs):
1. No backup needed if JS reserved on DL mainline flight. If you can't make sign in due to a delay or cancel then the trip is removed with no pay protection and with no disciplinary action 2. Automatic PS if you have JS listed and get bumped (FAA, MEL, etc) 3. Automatic PS on backup if you have one and can't get on the primary. Remove the 2 hour between flights requirement. 4. No limits on or threats of discipline for using the PS backup provision 5. Any time the company declares double 23k in effect for a domicile, that automatically triggers PS to/from work for the duration of the waiver 6. Add a "call in honest" policy for pilots who commute not via air (drive, train, etc) and cannot report for reasons outside their control. Trip removal with no pay protection and with no disciplinary action |

I got dragged through CPO fun because my truck broke down on the way in for a GS. Driving down I-80, sensor the dealer just replaced under warranty but didn't clip cable in fully disconnected. Under the turbocharger so not able to touch it until it sat and cooled off 30 minutes. Then I was covered in crap.
"You should leave with enough time to get truck towed and then Uber to airport" "You neeed a backup plan for your ground commute" Actual things said by CPO with ALPA present. |

The real question is:
Why don't you to this day STILL not have a motorcycle with a saddle bag mount for your work luggage? I've already seen a DL pilot walking around the airport with a motorcycle helmet in hand. No excuses, sir. Dismissed 🫡 |

im sure nothing in your future life would never ever make you a commuter right?
Old / sick parents? be near kids / grandkids? actual live where you want? but you are right, we are much better off delaying the next contract as long as possible. 23m7 is the best commuter option we’ve got! |

If the conversation for PSC revolved around codifying PSC as a protection for pilots involuntarily displaced from their domiciles or for pilots who's base closed, that would be one thing. That would EASILY get a majority backing since it would benefit everyone.

Lol, why am I not shocked that you have a story for this. 🤣
Something along the lines of "if pilot left for airport at what would be a reasonable time to make report and unanticipated weather, traffic, accident or vehicular malfunction (word to cover personal vehicle, private and public transport) occurs, they shall not he subject to discipline. If they will be beyond x minutes late for report, the company may, at their discretion remove the pilot from trip without pay or (language to join rotation/23K equivalent/whatever) |

5. Any time the company declares double 23k in effect for a domicile, that automatically triggers PS to/from work for the duration of the waiver So when flights are cancelling, seats are scarce, and paying passengers are getting stranded in airports, those are the days to give everyone PSC? Which of course is what the company does now at whatever metric they are using to trigger it. I’d argue if you can give PSC during double 23k, it should be child’s play to have it all the time. |
