Wait, what?

That had better be one heck of an extremely well-documented case of ‘theft by absence’ if true.

Interesting if true.

The old saying of “kill a chicken to scare the monkeys” comes to mind.

If it’s not legit, ALPA will (and should) get him back.

The company can fire anyone for any reason. But if it doesn’t meet the standards in PWA section 18, to include the company having “just cause”, a pretty high standard, the pilot will get their job back in arbitration.

Until it's confirmed, I'll assume this is a rumor started my management to keep the peasants in line.

Do you have any historical context for how often this kind of thing happens?

They don't fire you via a letter. So many security concerns if that's the first notification. What if said pilot was still on a trip when the letter arrived at their house? That doesn't pass the smell test. They also rarely if ever fire you for a single cause unless it's so egregious. Sick abuse could've been the straw that broke the camel's back but we need more info to be certain.

I think you just won the “Most Irresponsible Post of the Year” Award. It’s a major award!

They’ll hand the pilot a letter at the meeting. But yes, this story is a BS management-sourced rumor until proven otherwise. If an attempt at termination actually occurred, then it would be because a mountain of evidence exists that a pilot lied about their sick status (difficult to prove in most cases).
