By Aug 19th I had 78(and some change) of credit. I had off from 20-24 Aug and would you guess what? They assigned me SC on the 25th. Now, with me being a somewhat new guy not wanting to rock the boat, I commute up to NY and sit the requisite 24 hours in my crashpad. However I saw 2 greenslips handed out. I call sched and ask *** and they said well we can't use you because you're so close to guarantee. So I go home the next day and the wife and I go visit her alma mater (Auburn!! War Eagle!!) where I get another phone call from scheduling for a SC the next day. Fed up I call and say to sched that they couldn't use me and why am I getting SC? She says, "Oh yeah well lets just take that off your schedule." I think someone may have mentioned it on here before but they must let the computer randomly assign SC. Or its the seperate bucket system for SC. Who knows??

My understanding is that they don't see anything but your days of availability, seniority number, and number of SC's completed. Every time I'm close to ALV or have a legality issue (30 in 7 or 24/7) I have to bring it to their attention. Just do everyone a favor and do it well before 3p so someone doesn't get an unwanted surprise.
The Cavalier is correct. WRT assigning SC the schedulers are first told what times to cover for each category. They don't pick them, they're just instructed which times to cover. Then they print a list which shows them your seniority, days of availability, & number of SCs served. Then they get a sheet of paper(yes a paper and pencil) with blank columns and write in the times to be covered in each category. They then go down the printed list, pick whose turn it is based on the new SC assignment system, and start writing in employee numbers next to each time. I think what a lot of people forget sometimes is just because a person may be on the Reserve Availability List, doesn't mean they're actually legal for every assignment(to include SC). They could have a 30/7 or 24/7 issue or could be finishing a trip. I think it's stupid that someone is on the list if they aren't legal for an assignment. It's called the Reserve Availability List, not the Maybe or Maybe Not Available List. If someone is flying that day, or has a rest/duty issue then they shouldn't be on the list. Anyway, if you're at the ATL campus and have time I highly recommend you head to the 4th floor and visit the schedulers. It's very interesting to see things from their side of the phone. |
On a brighter note, I have been holding a line since the reserve rules changed. Hopefully that continues because if it doesn't, I'll be in the weekends off, work everyday crowd.

Of all of this is a moot point because DALPA put your yellow slip in for you when the ALV +15 kicks in. Wasn't it nice to have options as a reserve...poof gone! |

Think of it this way, if you do make that call perhaps you are actually doing THEM a favor by helping the operation. I've been in the exact same situation and told them plain as day look I will be happy to go up and sit but I'm not putting in a yellow slip just so you can use me.

Yeah I called and told them right away. Good info Johnso, I've been wanting to go visit the schedulers because I spent 4 years in the AF in 2 different assignments being a scheduler. I know how it can suck.
They definitely have what I consider to be a stressful job, so I appreciate how laid back they generally are. :) |
Perhaps guys who are assigned SCs that are not in compliance with the contract or FARs should also drop a note to the DALPA scheduling committee so they can track it.
Just sayin' Nu |

I spent 2.5+ hours watching and chatting with the 7er B scheduler while I had some free time during 7er training. You can walk right in to the schedulers work place. It was neat to see what they deal with. I sometimes forget how many pilots the 7er B scheduler alone deals with. He/she covers SEA, LAX, SLC, MSP, DTW, ATL, and NYC dealing with sick calls, re-routes, wx events, trip coverage, SC assignment and non stop phone calls. It was this visit that stopped my being annoyed with SC assignments not being out before 1100, which obviously isn't required but that's the latest I want it. And it is all about me. :D
