Can you explain why ALPA felt it more prudent to settle those cases rather than litigate? Was there a trail of e-mails in the UAL case that showed pilots might not have listened to the advice they were given?
I think they settled because they were afraid the judgments might be so large that it would kill the golden goose.

I blame the pilots who have been unable or unwilling to control the growth of ALPA Int'l. I think we need to elect some true reformers who will enforce some fiscal restraint on that beast. In the simplest terms -- ALPA National is too big and it spends too much. I think they have lost sight of truly serving their constituents and are focused more on sustaining their empire. They are like any other giant bureaucracy. Like the japanese government (and increasingly our own government) the elected types come and go but they are unable to overcome the power and inertia of the permanent establishment.

In law school they teach to go after the people with the deep pockets. In large part I think ALPA National has made themselves a target of big lawsuits precisely because they have the resources to absorb big settlements.

You are absolutely correct. There are many lawyers out there who have made lucrative careers out of either suing or defending ALPA. They like it that way and they have zero incentive to put an end to it. On either side.
As long as we keep sending in our dues they will keep consuming them.

Absolutely! I did a four-day trip last week that every layover destination had KCM. It was great.

So... they're admitting their administration is completely non-transparent.

Why waste our dues money and time on another round of eyewash? Why would we expect this round of surveys to be treated and acted upon any differently than the last one?
Well, if you're capable of the skills known as listening, and note-taking, you should get your trips bought and volunteer to make some calls. Maybe once they see you as an insider they'll divulge all that information to you. Then they'll send you to ALPA brain washing school. Then you won't care about survey results and the like. You'll only care about what time cocktail hour starts (430) and what South American county the cigars are from today.

Such an idealist you are. Take a look at AMR's term sheet for the pilots then lemme know how you're doing. Just for comparison's sake, a 3rd year 737 FO at DAL makes $6 an hour more than a 12,13,14,...,25 year AMR 737 FO.

Southwest? (In my best water boy voice) "We'll get em next time"

Be careful what you pontificate on a web board for. Keep hiding behind that keyboard. It'll keep you safe.

What is his legacy thus far?
I'm not here to sing Moak's praises. My opinion of him shifted from innovative leader in CH11, to just another guy that wants the job, sometime ago. Don't hate him, rank him just above Prater and Woerth, but that doesn't say a lot.

Of course, you do me a disservice by talking past my point. My post had nothing to do with Moak. What's your answer to the question I asked of Essential: would 500K be out of bounds for any effective president of ALPA, or just this guy?

Yep - picked up my card when I drove up for the Flight Ops brief - which was cancelled. Still waiting for the E-mail that alerts guys the meeting is cancelled. Then again it not like gas is expensive in CA.

4 hours of my life I'll never get back.

0430 cocktail hour? What, they also make you into a raging alcoholic?

Oh, okay. Well, I kind of missed your name, rank and seniority number when you gave it out, want to post it up again?

Yeah, I was gonna drive down but forgot about it. Why'd they cancel?

[QUOTE=Check Essential; ALPA had to sell its HQ building to pay off Spellacy.[/QUOTE]

I thought Spellacy got overturned. Just did a quick google search, Spellacy v. ALPA, I saw a long decision:

SPELLACY II v. AIRLINE PILOTS ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL III

that ends with this:

"Because we conclude that Judge Weinstein correctly granted ALPA's motion for judgment as a matter of law, we need not address either ALPA's contention that Judge Weinstein erred in instructing the jury or the pilots' argument that the grant of a new trial was improper.
CONCLUSION
We have considered all the arguments raised by appellants and find them to be without merit.   Accordingly, the judgment of the district court is AFFIRMED.
McLAUGHLIN, Circuit Judge."

SPELLACY II v. AIRLINE PILOTS ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL III, No.

Perhaps someone can explain it. Was this the final judgment? If so, did ALPA ultimately prevail even though a jury had found ALPA guilty?
