With home renters, you better believe you are paying for the property tax. I have a few rentals and the rent I charge includes the property tax, so someone else pays it for me. |
Why are churches tax emempt, the priests/pastors income, property taxes? Are they not a business?

Can we get off taxes and get back to predicting the Alaska codeshare meltdown? Ok I'll admit I have skin in the game and a vested interest in seeing more west coast block hours back at DAL. Since my displacement (which I attribute directly to flying transferred to our DCI carrier Alaska)... I've lost at least 180extra days away from my family and over $12,000 in commuting/crash pad expense. The faster this unravels the better and yes I'm bitter and un-apologetic about it. Rant over.

Just to clarify, TW doesn't own a G-V. He uses NetJets, at least that is what they said when I toured one on the ramp in Orlando before his divorce. As they are one of his sponsers (or at least was) it is probably a tax write off for NetJets and he flies for free.

Like aircraft tax deductions, it's always up for review and audit and they can bust organizations or take away their tax exempt status if their activity isn't passing muster. My dad and wife both work for nonprofits, they run into stuff all of the time where it falls in the gray area of the rules and the best idea is just to pay the taxes and thus not worry about an audit. Just like our own taxes and deductions. Also, the government has a tendency to not apply rules evenly, so throw that into the mix. As to preachers, you still pay the same taxes but in many instances you're considered self-employed and thus pay the entire social security tax because the church doesn't pay that for you. So you actually make out worse. To the bigger point, taxes can always change via Congress and we get to elect them. See the 1791 Whiskey Rebellion for details. |

Completely agree!
I read somewhere that when Leon Panetta was offered a job by Obama (Head of CIA or SECDEF, I can't remember which) he got Obama to agree that he could fly home to California every weekend in a government jet. And he didn't pay a dime for it. That's a heinous waste of taxpayer money. Claim it to be for security reasons, that's fine, but she had a tendency to no show at the last minute or as the DOD said: “Any chance of politely querying [person] if they really intend to do all of these or are they just picking every weekend?…[T]here’s no need to block every weekend ‘just in case’… " What we should've done is scored a DCA-SFO route out of the deal, partly government funded instead of fully. :D And then we'd give that route up to Alaska. I know I know. Hopefully we're changing that and so I yield back the balance of my time to Erdude32 and I'm going to stop talking about taxes. Cuz I got my back already. |
