Delta Air Lines Inc. plans to order 100 to 200 narrow-body jets and seek options for 200 more, a deal that may become the biggest in commercial aviation history, as it replaces some of its oldest planes.

A request for proposals went to “several” planemakers last month, and deliveries may begin as soon as 2013, Atlanta- based Delta told employees today on an internal website without identifying the companies. Airbus SAS and Boeing Co. are the biggest commercial-jet makers.

But why wait 2 years to get the 739?

Perhaps because its when they wanted them. They are primarily replacements for the 757's. The orders were to coincide with when 757's starting hitting heavy maintenance checks. Now however it appears some of those 737 are going to be growth aircraft. I also think but have seen nothing from the company that the widebody they really want is going to be the 777-X. Those wont hit the streets until 2019 at the earliest.

Anyway - I wonder if the reduction in airspace-clogging RJs and Airtran reductions in ATL is making Attila not worth it. I mean, if we're trying to increase the number of slots in ATL, any economist or airline consultant (unless you work for an RJ manufacturer) would say to reduce the number of planes by putting adding more seats to the same slot. That would increase "productivity" of a landing "slot" in ATL.

Amazing - you could run more people through ATL with less planes and less delays. Save money.

I doubt we'd be getting rid of Attilla if it was saving us money.

They are coming out with a newer version that will interface with ATC. That is the biggest problem with the current version.

Does that mean we are going to hire pilots, at the bottom of our list? Or does it mean more efficiencies of our existing pilots? Does that mean a merger with another airline that has excess pilots? All important questions to junior peeps. (And by junior, I mean seniority numbers under 10,000)

Under the current plan it means they are going to hire pilots. Plans change daily. More block hours equals more pilots.

After 4 years of 88 reserve flying, I have a line.

Caution...optimism warning, read at your own risk:eek:

I would guess that we waited two years because we didn't need them for 2 years. Our need for feed has been reduced for the last few years by all the widebodies that have been offline for upgrades. Next summer will be the first time that our full combined WB fleet has been available. So, in the meantime, we've been working on upgrading facilities (ATL F terminal, JFK Term 4, etc) and improving the feed capability (717's, etc.).

It'll be interesting to track how many of the 73's are actually replacements. If we actually get a growth WB accouncement, I'd guess that number of replacements will be pretty small. We will also need more feed for Virgin Atlantic jets if that whole deal goes through. I think next summer will be very interesting. I'm cautiously optimistic. I really think we are in a great position to leave the UAL and AA in the dust if all RA's plans come together.

of course, sailingfun chimes in while I'm typing, so this is all redundant

Why do you think SD is going through the A320 training?
Any ideas?

I think we'll know if the 739s were replacement jets on March 15, 2023.

I've heard more than one time that "flight ops doesn't quite know what to do with the A320." Maybe he's trying to figure it out.

JG in NRT yesterday went to great lengths to dispel the flt ops statement. The Board decides these things, not flt ops and not RA and there is no decision. In addition crew skeds wants to hire ( and is very worried about retirements and growth and being behind the power curve for YEARS.) but was told no. Doesn't matter what RA wants, the Board pulls the strings.

In recurrent last week, we were told training in march curtailed so we could show the first ever 1st qtr profit. Who is the puppet master?

I think Sailing is well plugged into Flt Ops, maybe not the BOD:(

BTW for SF there is no FPL involved, just a smart involved kinda guy.

We are only pawns...

uh... that won't help me sleep at night.
