There is no doubt Lawson screwed up. But who has the duty to protect Delta pilots? Lawson? Hardly! Look what had to happen before Lawson even had the opportunity to stick his foot in his mouth: (1) ALPA allowed alter ego operations on the Delta property providing a source of replacement pilots, (2) The Delta pilots and their Representatives failed to negotiate effective scope which would prohibit the replacement of Delta pilots with alter ego pilots, (3) The Delta MEC failed to negotiate with Delta Inc a change in the subsidiaries policies regarding the hiring of furloughed pilots. If you're smart, you hold the guy responsible that WAS responsible. Lawson had no responsibility for the well being of Delta pilots. Frankly, I don't care what he says, he does not represent me. |

Chente,
Unfortunately Delta's history of pilot domiciles on the west coast is not good if you want to live in the west and not commute. After DAL bought Western they were then the largest carrier at LAX. DAL operated a 737 shuttle operation between LAX and SFO. They operated many north-south routes and flew to several destinations in Mexico. The recession in the early nineties hit California harder than other parts of the US and that's when DAL started moving everything east. Later on they closed pilot domiciles in PDX and Seattle as they abandoned routes to Asia out of PDX, and flights to Alaska out of SEA. But hey, now they had something like ten mainline flights a day from ATL to GSP! I'm a big fan of Glen Hauenstein, and RA as well. I believe they will position jets (and pilots) where they will make money for the company. I don't believe they are wedded to the Atlanta-centric mentality of past managements. Good luck in your quest to live in-base out west. I think it will happen, hopefully soon! I hope it does man! I hope it does. I'm trying to get out west but the way things are going it seems likes it's going to be a looong time. Hope i'm wrong. And Iceman, Yeah Delta has always been my goal, the fact that they have (May soon be "had") West Coast bases only added to me wanting to be here. Only Airline to which I applied. |
WOW over 13K posts. Guess we are catching up to Comair!

AE reality
Having just been MD out of my category and spending several hours on the phone with ALPA and crew resources to clarify the AE process several things came to light. Many I think and myself included ( at DALS) felt the MD was a priority of some kind to protect your seat. It is not. It only waives training freezes and allows for re-instatement. AE and seniority rules. Keep that in mind post SOC bids. Anyone can be bumped. MD's do not get any priority. AE's are done first always. Again MD's are not there to protect you. I assumed I would be ok because the MD's would be done first, then if there were any openings left after the MD's were completed they would be awarded by AE in seniority order. After SOC dont assume because there are no openings in your domicile that you will be ok. You are not. If they close the MD88 in SLC (which seems like the first post SOC possibility) this AE stuff starts. If a DALN A320 Capt wants LAX and there are no LAX openings it takes just one displacement anywhere in the system to make LAX open to anyone. The computer does not think about anything but seniority and it is the only priority. Whenever it gets to your number it just puts you where your number can hold. I asked specifically to ALPA, "what is the point of the MD bid category"? answer: "to avoid equip freeze and re-instatement rights"
It does nothing to protect current QOL. I ended up fine and I dont have to commute (this time) but I hate virginia avenue. I hope it does not turn out to be a long year of perpetual training. I decided to add my post because A LOT of Senior captains I was flying with thought it was MD then AE to whatever is open. Most thought the worst that would happen in these scenarios is that they would go down in the domicile not out of the domicile. NOT TRUE at all. It is going to be very interesting post SOC. Many may have already known this but just make sure you are clear what the MD does and does not do. |

Many may have already known this but just make sure you are clear what the MD does and does not do. AE first, then VD's and then MD's. Just because you got a AE to a position does not mean that you cannot be MDed out of that position as guys senior to you MD in to it on a surplus bid. You will not even see if you were awarded an AE if you were subsequently MDed off of it. For example the 7ER in LAX. Only about 32 bid it. Well with all of the 767 guys out there MDing the position, a really junior guy might have held the AE but been bumped off as the senior 767 guys MDed in to position. |
I'm a little confused on the new jumpseat memo. I'm DAL-S. As of August 23rd, are we going to be able to reserve a DAL-N jumpseat? Are the procedures going to change at all?

My only recommendation is to review all your AE/VD/MD preferences and put some thoughts into your next move. Few of us are completely safe from the changes on the horizon. VA Ave. is not that bad. ;) Word is that I will only be there for a few day since it's been around 18 months since I last flew the 76. Talk about short course..... my first experience with that. I'm standing by for the firehose! TC |

My only problem with Virginia Ave is the Country Food resturant by the hotel. I have an affinity for Southern cooking and sweet tea, both of which are in short supply in Socal. Normally pack on a few pounds even with the extra PT that I do to try to compensate.
