For my C2012 wishlist, if the company wants to relocate us every 3 months, they better relax their current moving expenses criteria, because some of us may not be able to hold their base for much longer. We'll see a lot of transcon commuters, as we've start to see in this trend in the last displacement.

Sailing, that's great advice if you have any say in the matter. However, now is not the time to be moving to a new base just to avoid the commute to reserve.

In order for a moving policy to be satisfactory now it will need to pay off our mortgages since most of the guys getting shuffled (07-08 hires) bought houses that are now worth alot less than they were two years ago. I'd have to sell my $200K house for at least a $30K loss if I wanted to move in the next two years, that makes it impossible for me to move even if they pay realtor fees and moving expenses. In addition to that, the human toll of up-rooting your family every couple of years cannot be compensated. What needs to be done is we need to improve the reserve system so you can sit long call from any city in the U.S. and improve the commuting policy to what the DAL-N guys had. That way we don't have to move.
To many pilots and to much money to have executive moves like that. We may get a few of them but they will never buy off a house. I see them giving us a better commuting policy first. (Or the will not make us eat the cost and just move) I am down over 100K in my house, but I know for a fact that DAL is never going to pay for that. If I see for a better QOL, and not commute, that will be my choice. That is why they allow commuting today. |
Commuting will be a fact of life, NW had very restrictive and a terrible pass policy prior to the merger with REP...I believe DL had a very restrictive jump seat policy and for sure did not allow other carriers acess. For NW it all changed for the good when the REP merger occured...someone finally figured out that individuals were not able to get to work...so sick calls went up, along with delays and cancelations.

I should hope in the next contract we won't have to "negotiate" these items, as many of our "wishing list" aren't exactly high dollar item, rather it will increase productivity, and minimize sick calls.

I have commuted my entire career. Two things need to happen if there is going to be a big increase in commuters, which I believe will happen when the 767 starts flying Asia with 12-14 day trips.
1. Adopt the DALS call- in-honest program. 2. Adopt the DALS jumpseat policy. Hope it happens for everyones benefit. |
