Again, if anyone has real world experience with managing this aspect of the tax strategy, I think at a minimum, it's valid to raise awareness for the future.

AMT is a joke. More and more people are hit with it every year and pretty soon the AMT will be our effective tax system.


I'm curious as well if anyone else has any suggestions to avoid, or at least minimize, AMT tax. The only real pertaining deductions that I've seen is 401k contributions and mortgage interest deductions.

I bought a hybrid in 06 and was suppose to get a tax CREDIT of $2700. Went into AMT which voided this credit. Beware of tax incentives if you think you might end up in AMT.

Look at the hiring for the affiliated regional carriers within your brand. If the regional subsidiary hired more than your carrier furloughed the only logical answer is lack of scope resulted in your furlough.

ALPA's merger policy was watered down in anticipation of the 2000 ALPA Board of Director's meeting requests for merger policy implementation at Delta's wholly owned airlines; ASA and Comair. It was at that BOD where ALPA embarked on a policy of excluding some members of our union from the same protections enjoyed by other members of our union.

When a subsidiary is junior manning Captains from new hire classes during mainline furloughs there is no two ways about it; that is a scope failure.

Today our union continues down this road of outsourcing some members to supposably benefit other members. In a union where every job is precious, this policy is morally wrong. This terrible policy, promulgated by politicians who do not grasp even the basics of unity, are responsible for the furloughs which followed massive outsourcing during our careers.

I do not agree with all of his points, for one, I think the maintenance related draw down of 50 seat jets will continue. However the new labor rates and reduction in fuel costs going forward might breathe some new life into the segment. Johnso29 disputes the numbers on scope grounds and his reply is worth brining here for your review:

The original post's point about economics appears generally correct. We have some scope protection as Johnson29 correctly rebutted.

I'd like to see how the 717 performs in relation to this new outsourcing model.

They will mark you FULL after you have reached the reserve guarantee when they start assigning trips for that day or if you call and ask to be FULL. You are full after passing the reserve guarantee. They can schedule you up to ALV + 15 but you would have to be below the reserve guarantee when that happens or have a yellow slip in. You will not be scheduled for a trip after you pass the reserve guarantee unless you request it.

If it's me and I'm qualified to be full...and want to be full. I'm taking 2 minutes to make a phone call and leave nothing to question. Our schedulers are very good but....

That's part of what's wrong with our "everyone gets a subsidy" country. A tax credit for buying a car? Crazy.

Unless you're planning on bidding the 717, it doesn't appear that the furlough returns are going to be effecting '07-'08 hires in other categories. According to the Flt Ops letter on the 19th, the Furlough returns will be going to the 717. Granted, in subsequent AE's with openings in other fleets they'll be able to bid onto whatever they can hold, as it should be, however the impact will be metered out amunst several fleets over several bids. I'm just glad everyone will finally have a chance to get back on property.

"The furlough bypass and new hire pilots will occupy unfilled positions in the Advance Entitlement posted today. This AE is intended to continue the flow of pilots through 717 training and includes 717 First Officer openings in ATL and DTW."

The Commute to DTW is better than being the plug in MSP. I would bid 717.
