Both Google and CityMaps have 'drop a pin'. Just remember to drop one at home base before you go prowling! I just need to figure out how to hook up a two axis auto pilot to a segway and my Iphone, then after the pub..."Home Geeves"

Timbo-
GPS pinpoints your location but does not provide any map data. (ie = rivers, lakes, streets, etc.) It is possible for Google maps to "pre-load" a certain limited area using Wi-Fi while you are still in the hotel. Just open the app and scroll around the area a bit. I've done that before. That would be free.
The problem is when you leave the Wi-Fi and then zoom in and out or you walk outside that area. Then you lose map data. You have to either find another Wi-Fi hotspot or turn on your cellular data. That's when the outrageous foreign roaming charges begin.

When using the traditional map apps, cellular data is normally used on the fly as you move around to build the map (street names, etc.) It can get expensive to use roaming cellular data in Europe or Asia for on-line maps like Google Maps, etc.

That is the part you avoid by using CityMaps2Go. The entire map is stored off-line right on your phone. No cellular data needed.

All of them (including CityMaps) use GPS to find your location on the map.
GPS is still free. (at least until the Air Force decides they need revenue)

Thanks CE. My Google Maps has a "Make Available Offline" feature that I use on a layover, because once I leave the USA, I leave my pone in Airplane Mode, so it will only use wifi in the hotels (free). I never get the roaming or data charges.

FYI, you can turn off data roaming or just shut off cellar data altogether if you still want to use your cell when traveling abroad.

I use the iPhone and just turn cellar data off altogether just to be safe. Last time I traveled abroad I unlocked one of my wife's old cell phones and just bought a SIM card overseas. You can reload it and I found it to be much cheaper than anything I would use through my cell phone provider.

Unlocking it can be a little pricey, but I found or to worth it. Easier to do than you think. Unlockings.com: The Leading Unlocking Site on the Net

Alright, to tell you the truth, not much really went on. I was very disappointed with the turnout. My guess is there were only about 5 (possibly a couple more) there who were not affiliated with the Union somehow. All the SEA Reps were there along with a guy from the MEC codeshare committee.

I printed out a copy of the latest MEC Update about the TAJV and discussed it with the Reps and the committee member. I was asked by the FO Rep if I thought any of it was "spin" and I said yes, I thought there were 2 places and I showed him where. I contended that where it said "the Delta pilots have maintained their "fair share" of the work" was one of them. Sounds like the codeshare committee is defining "fair share" from the past, as in before Alitalia vs after Alitalia joined on the AF/KLM side. (I didn't see any numbers but supposedly we are up to the amount of JV flying we were doing before Alitalia.) My contention was no, we are not maintaining our fair share. Our fair share is contractually defined. I also thought that sentence about growth beyond our fair share which didn't occur was over the top.

Talked about a few other things like the 316 NRT departures. No discussions/negotiations have taken place yet.

I got the distinct impression from all the reps that they were not getting very much input from the line pilot and would like a lot more.

I would highly recommend going if there is ever one in your area. Hey, what pilot doesn't like free beer, free food and free parking!! (Yeah, Yeah, I know it's all paid with dues money but, hey, no out of pocket expenses!)

This is the way to go. Can DL detailed maps while in the US or hotel to a card or memory and no charges. Also works great when you know you will be in an area with sketchy cell coverage like ATL. I have the whole city stored on my card.
