Some of them are very bitc... pitchy. I used to descend sometimes on the 88 and when everything was stable I'd switch from FMS or V/S into IAS and it'd do it smooth as glass. Did it one night in the 90 and swore I'd never do it again.

I got to the point I'd rather just fly the MD-88.

Beats that hero cartoon my science teacher in elementary school kept showing us all the time. The guy was creepy.

Some of the 90's do that. (I think one airplane even has the nickname, "Flipper.") I've had mixed results with the technique of giving it a quick shot of nose down alternate trim to stop it.

I don't know what causes it, but I highly suspect it has to do with the fact that the 90 has hydraulic powered elevators with essentially the same autopilot as the 88 (which has control tab driven elevators).

I agree. I can switch modes in the 88 with perfect smoothness. And I can usually do the same thing in the 90. But I've had a couple of 90's do what you're talking about. Very frustrating. And then there's all the maintenance issues with the 90's.

I love the 90's reverse and brakes... but other than that, I'd rather fly an 88 any day.

Was that Flipper?

I have been wondering what was going on with that mod. It seems like in the past, whenever they start talking major avionics upgrade, the fleet ends up sunsetted. Not saying that's going to happen. But if we can't do RNAV RNP, at least the nexgen stuff, then what are the options? Such a big fleet, and so key to the lower capital cost structure, they are going to have to come up with something. I remember they were looking at putting HUDs in the mad dog a long time ago...

I don't know that much about the nextgen/RNP stuff. But couldn't that be satisfied by putting the Pegasus FMS (with GPS) in all the 88/90's and using the same instrument displays we have now? We already have Pegasus FMS in some of the 90's.

I would think so, yes. Just like the 757's that went from 200k and INS to Pegasus and GPS. On the old displays.

Flew the 90's in DFW and SLC..we had "flipper", "little flipper", and "son of flipper" stenciled on the forward instrument panel in sharpie..don't know if they're still marked. A few shots of alternate trim opposite the pitch moment usually dampened it out..still liked the 90 better than the 88.

We keep you alive to serve this ship..row well and live..
