OK, seems like we're struggling with why the third guy is there, and whether he has to be there. At a minimum, he's there because the contract says so, and I think we want to be in the business of enforcing the contract.
Regardless of the reason, you've got three guys. You want to use the third guy? He needs to be rested, because he's liable. If you want to go the other way, like CAL used to, then let's put the relief in the cabin, with a Scotch in hand, for the outbound leg to Europe. |

Good point. Does the FDP include the :30 debrief time, after block-in?

Sadly the FAR does not agree with you.
Does the FAR have a specific rule for how to schedule rest for augmented crews that are FAR required, vs. how to schedule rest for augmented crews that are required by the PWA? If you're flying with an augmented crew, and you don't comply with the rest assignments for augmented crews... are you legal just because your flight is < 8:00? If your "relief" is not required, and you're not planning to rest them accordingly, then what are they doing in your cockpit? |

Errr... scotch in hand? While I would love to DH to Europe to fly back, at CAL the relief FO deadheads in coach I believe, unless there is an upgrade available. Don't quote me on that, but I think that's the way it is - or was - a few years ago.

The FDP does not start at pickup from the hotel - it starts at scheduled report time. 1:30 (intl, iirc) or 1:00 (domestic) prior to scheduled push. Transportation from the hotel is specifically excluded in the FAR.

How about :30 for taxi-out, :10 for taxi-in, so FT of 6:50?

Here's a question, why does the "Relief Pilot" get any break at all??
He's only there to -Relieve- the other two pilots so they can get some rest. They are doing the actual flying, not him, right? So why should he get the same break as the two "Flying Pilots"? Discuss... :D (FTB, can you give me a emoticon of a hornet's nest being smacked with a stick?) Fire away. |

When I was on the -er, the mid galley was the source of all the plate rattling and then the cart wielding ranchers who worked on their ability to hip-check the rest area curtain. Rest only happened on 2nd break. (not based on science, but experience)
Some put up the tray table and put the curtain around it. Some shoved the curtain into the seat to it wasn't moved every time a size 20 went by. Kept us occupied until the sun came up. |
