I don't know for a fact that NW had much of a presence in Europe before the agreement, so it would be useful to start with a before/after comparison before making such a conclusion. Same is true for Alaska. Seems to me we squandered the West Coast all by ourselves, by coughing up the Western stuff.

All code-share and JV agreements are designed to do the same job with less resources, or more with existing resources. They're definitely not designed to generate pilot jobs. The flip side of this is that we've seen that we're remarkably competitive in this industry, and most attempts to capture market share only kill yields, not competitors. Therefore, it seems to me the company can make more by eliminating competition through agreement than by trying to overpower it. Assuming you can strike agreements that preserve the ratios of flying currently in place, and restrict the ability to grow one side exclusively, then you have a means to reduce shrinkage, probably maintain existing flying, and share the growth. There may be a happy medium there.

It's a bitter pill to swallow that we're sharing future flying with AF/KLM, and a lot sweeter to imagine that we would have conquered the Atlantic ourselves without any help. If only that were true...

Ironically, I hear the AF-KLM pilots are just as scared of us as we are of them. Turns out we're the low-cost producer across the Atlantic. I wonder if the same isn't true with the Pacific, and JAL.

Very good points even though they are not always popular.

BTW, it is the KLM pilots that are really worried. They fear that AF and DAL could just part out their flying without much thought.

Always good to find some more flying.

Just finished crunching some Form 41 data. My opinion - we need to double down on our operational focus on domestic flying and ensure this product is performing as it should.

I worry that our constant deal making and code shares are seen as a way around some operational cost deficiencies. It may be our outdated fleet (including cost plus RJ's, DC9's and MD's) that is stretching our numbers. That was clearly the case when fuel was sky-high. Now I'm not entirely sure without some more research. None the less at the bottom line we are letting ourselves get less and less competitive. Frankly, we are uncompetitive with airlines we need to beat.

We should not be looking for a "way around" a fix for our domestic flying. These days we send DCI management to conferences on domestic flying, sending the message that we do not perceive domestic flying as a core product.

Deploying the 737-700 is a start. If the C Series can do that job reliably for 25 to 30% less (which would be CRJ operating costs) then it will be a game changer. If it costs half to two thirds of what a 737 costs and has an easy Canadian Socialist Government (jobs program) subsidized payment plan, that would be even better.

I don't know if Delta would take the risk on a paper airplane, but, we've done about 11Billion worth of business with Bombardier in the last decade. As Ron White says "we've met."

Smarter people than me can figure out the answer, I just fly the airplanes. But I'd like to be on the team that meets and beats the competition across the board.

Bar, my numbers show the C-Series at about 40 mil a copy. I do see it as a game changer and one that we will/should be committing to. IMHO deciding not to renew with a fleet of new 320's or 73N's basically means that we need to go for the C-Series. Waiting until 2020+ for the next gen plastic jets is a non-starter. What we got, will limp to that day, and as you state, will have a very hard time making DAL a player until the new jets show up.

Denny,

When do "we" (Ariz State/Washington) play? Loser has to marry Alan?

Ferd

Of course, we have played a small Idaho college and tonight we're playing Univ Louisiana-Monroe......so I think you have the advantage in schedules LOL.

Revenge was sweet for my Horns!!

The best revenge game I've seen in a while was FL over UGA 49-10 last year including the time out at the end of the game to savor the moment and rub it in. That's revenge. You shouldn't (UGA) taunt a team (FL) better than you, thats like

And since when has defense been outlawed in college football? Holy cow, this week was nuts in game after game, except Satchip, the Auburn game where the Auburn defense got 6 turnovers. ;)

Man, they're running out of pilots in ATL. A lot of missed commutes today and those who commuted in all drowned, but hopefully they'll feel better soon.

So the only thing I can think for Delta to do is start hiring. :D soon.
