No Sir, I did not misunderstand. I understood (and wrote) long before they happened. I did my best to advise the Captains, that "hey boss you've set the altitude alert below the MEA." so many times.

Going forward its going to get ugly and there will be pressures on yields that no amount of capacity trimming will solve. We will have to take it to them with extreme prejudice, running some out of markets at a cost, and driving others to liquidation. Or they will do it to us. The biggest threat is how soon the collective MBA bonus mongers in the industry, high on the capacity yield gravy train, can turn around their own mentality and adapt their playbook.

That's heady stuff... our own gov't is playing for the other team. 'Flag Carrier' used to mean something. A capacity/yield war will have devastating effects on our jobs. But the alternative could be worse. I'm sure any sign of competitive pressure on the other carriers by the legacies will be met with legal action by our very own DOJ...

First - I've only been here six years. That makes me practically a new hire. If we furlough again, I'm a goner. The "next time" comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. Sorry.

Second - I'm not mad that anyone came back from furlough. In fact, I'm glad that everyone who wants to be back, is. Welcome back, let's move on. :)

Lastly - My comment was meant to illustrate that there could have been a better way to bring guys back. For instance, SLC and LAX. We don't actually know if the bypass guys were senior enough to hold these positions since there hadn't been any posted vacancies in some time. There could have been a large number of senior guys waiting to get in but never got the chance. On the flip side, what about the bypass guy that could have held a wide body seat somewhere but was not given that option? Thats why letting them participate in the AE process seems to make the most sense. But, it's not in the contract. Oh well.

I honestly cannot imagine what it must have been like to be furloughed. Though it happened to some good friends of mine, I have not had to experience it myself. And for that I'm very thankful. In 2008, when oil prices were skyrocketing and the economy was tanking, I though for sure I was going to be on the street. But it didn't happen, and now things seem to be looking up. With any luck, this "pilot shortage" will make the furloughed pilot a thing of the past.

Oh, and if I didn't say it already, welcome back!

I truly appreciate your approach and your foresight. I also agree that unified is the only way. My comment about you not understanding is really based on the tenet that if you haven't been there, you can't go there. We had guys taking their lives and leaving families behind. It was horrid. So, while I appreciate your sentiment, most of us don't feel that there are thanks owed both ways. This is not directed at you....hundreds of Delta and NWA guys were kicked to the curb and younger, less experienced guys accelerated their careers at regionals because of that. Fine, that's life and that's definitely the career we have embarked upon. Please understand that guys who were hired years before your peers and are choosing to come back ( many senior to me BTW) are owed every possible advantage as is detailed in our PWA.

When I was switching bases (ie, I got the award on an AE, but same equipment) I talked to Crew Resources about delaying my conversion because of vacation (back when we had to rebid). They said it was easier to much easier to delay the conversion than advance it, because of just what you said, seniority.

Now if you have to train, it might be a different story depending on how bad they need you in your future category. Like the other poster said, I'd start with Crew Resources. They are reasonable people and a good place to start.

OMG, you think the FA's even hear what you're blabbing about? All they hear is "prepare for departure". That's it. Nobody cares about the rest. Some pilots just like to hear themselves talk.

Every PA is an interruption. Use only when absolutely necessary. You're not the tour guide on the jungle cruise ride at the amusement park. People have iPhones now. They know what the temperature is... everywhere.
