Exactly correct Check...

At what point of selling off our professional relevance do we become irrelevant.

The biggest worry we should have right now is the next President of ALPA.

The leading candidate is Tim Cannoll.

He can be accurately described as "Moak's mini-me".

We are in trouble.

Call me cynical but there's probably a lot more money in working for airlines who make a billion dollars in profit each quarter with multi billion dollar pilot labor costs they want to control then to be the Chairman of a union or President of a national union.

His audience was Wall Street types also...if he can appear to support big business and control labor...his options open up considerably.

Looks like Lee is trying to find a gig where he doesn't have to wear one.

Doesn't matter that he has to betray his current constituents to do it. Integrity-wise, I'd rate Lee Moak far worse than Tim Martins.

Duane Woerth formed an advertising company right after he got out of ALPA. He then immediately landed contracts with ONLY the ALPA carriers whose contracts were gutted.

Look up the history of Sojern Inc. if you don't believe me.

I think some have missed the bigger point. Not all MEC's are currently in active negotiations (not us either but some are pulling out the war drums). Moak's audience was not us. By making a statement like he did, it pacifies and gives confidence to Wall Street and investors, hence the stock prices of the industry increase. Then as each MEC enters negotiations, they're better positioned. Leverage is frangible and has time limits. Everyone knows DAL is making a ton of money (certainly US Air & UAL). Everyone knows we took a bath on wages during bankruptcy. Everyone knows we're looking for a big payout. The issue is how much and in what form. I think its a brilliant strategy to say everything is rosy and we're all happy to work with the individual companies. We (DAL) undoubtedly have the best working relationship and US Air/American not so much. The RJ guys are in serious turmoil so why not talk about everything as roses and perfume....until a MEC opens negotiations....then we get serious and watch the stock price then....

Here is how the professionals handle questions about upcoming contracts:

Airlines have been mum on what they’ll seek in the contract talks, despite some analyst queries on quarterly earnings calls. “We have a productive and proactive relationship with our pilots and ALPA, focused on winning in the marketplace and addressing our business challenges and opportunities together,” Delta spokeswoman Kate Modolo said in an e-mail. A Spirit spokesman, Paul Berry, declined to comment, as did a spokeswoman for Hawaiian, Alison Croyle.

And Moak:

Moak contends that ALPA pilots at the larger carriers enjoy what he calls “mature, good contracts” already.

“You can argue about $2 or $2.05, and that matters to the crew member,” but “you’re working on the margins” on the new contracts, he says.

Whatever happened to we don't negotiate in public? Right now, I'll take that.

What part of that is negotiation?

If you say so...

OTOH, I disagree with that "oh so brilliant plan" completely.

"I'd like the Congressional Medal of Honor. No, on the other hand I'd like every member of operation keno to get the Congressional Medal of Honor..."

So, when you get to that little nest you feathered for yourself on Nantucket Island are you going to take off that Nazi uniform? That's what I thought...

Personally, I can't abide that.

How do we know he was correctly quoted, or quoted in context?

The proper procedure is for the MEC Chairman to request an Executive Board Meeting. You could lobby your Rep to lobby his MEC Chairman, but really, that is not happening over a magazine quote that might not even be exactly spot on correct.

Buck

So we should believe they misquoted Moak 5 times?

Lee knows what he is doing and his message has always been clear.

Maybe the strategic thinker of the two, but "mini-me" is a bad characterization.

Also, the other two announced candidates are having a hard time orating a position that looks anything but election year promises.
