Frontier Air puts 6 crew on leave as precaution amid Ebola worry

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Frontier Airlines said six crew members were placed on paid leave for 21 days "out of an abundance of caution," after learning that a nurse who had treated an Ebola victim may have been symptomatic when she flew on the airline earlier this week.

The leave affects two pilots and four flight attendants aboard flight 1143 from Cleveland to Dallas/Fort Worth on Oct. 13, which carried a Texas nurse who later tested positive for the deadly virus, Frontier said in statement late Wednesday.

The Centers for Disease Control had informed the airline Wednesday that the nurse "may have been symptomatic earlier than initially suspected, including the possibility of possessing symptoms while on board the flight," the statement said.

The nurse, Amber Vinson, 29, was isolated immediately after reporting a fever on Tuesday, Texas Department of State Health Services officials said. She had treated Liberian patient Thomas Eric Duncan, who died of Ebola on Oct. 8 and was the first patient diagnosed with the virus in the United States.

And she was cleared to fly by CDC (according to CNN)

Sailingfun, earlier you posted that there would be 900 million or so in profit sharing. Is that in addition to what was already paid out or was the Sep payment part of that? Will we get a Feb check and how much, roughly?

Was just in the main terminal and up walks Congressman John Lewis... To thank me for my service (I'm wearing my Delta uniform). I thanked him for his, in that politics is a rough business, I'm told.

The next thing he said was that he loved seeing our ALPA guys on the hill, and that they were doing great work up there.

Hard to get a better plug for the PAC.

September was included in the profit sharing but if things go as planned your Feb check will be similar in amount to your check last year.

I'll have to reread the release. I thought we made a profit on the fuel hedges as well.

"$82 Million – The amount Delta reduced its fuel expense during Q3 as a result of fuel management initiatives, including $63 million in hedge gains and a $19 million profit at Delta’s Monroe Energy refinery subsidiary. The airline expects hedges and the refinery to reduce its overall fuel cost by $200 million for the entire year."

From the earnings call this morning...they expect the overall profit sharing payout to be almost a billion, equivalent to 15% of W-2 for employees. We've already received 5%, so the check in Feb should be about 10% of 2014 W-2 (Flight Pay + Flight Adv).

While I may not agree with the whole "act", I think it is important that people at least understand what it is and how it works. All of us will be buying our health care insurance that way within 5 years anyways so you just as well get to know what we've got.

You have just as much chance of getting shuffled around on UHC insurance through Delta as someone does who purchases insurance through an exchange. No one is "on" the affordable care ac,t they buy insurance through an exchange. In fact, in some states people "on" the affordable care act have access to the exact same plans we do from UHC, they just pay more in premiums. So, they have no more chance of being denied coverage than you or I do.

In my area I can purchase a BCBS HSA plan from the exchange that is almost identical to what Delta is offering in the Silver HSA plan for 2015. Delta will charge me about $200/mo while on the exchange the plan costs about $750. Right now that is not very "affordable" unless I become unemployed and don't have access to an employer provided plan. If I had to pay COBRA premiums to keep my Delta UHC plan I would be just over $1000 an month so at that point it is a more affordable option to get health care coverage for my family.

At the end of the day, either way I get my health insurance it is provided by a private insurance company. As long as I "choose" the plan that has the coverage I need, I should not get denied coverage if I get Ebola whether I have UHC insurance through Delta or through an Exchange.

Good post. As an aside, I think if you were to become unemployed, the cost of the plans on the exchange would be much cheaper. I was under the impression that the less you make, the cheaper the plans are.
