There are several interesting books on this topic that will at the very least make you wonder if pilots will be flying in 10-20 years, and at worst will make you think this is the greatest existential threat to humanity. Plenty of very smart people out there suggesting this as well. There may literally only be one chance to get it right.

Our Final Invention: Artificial Intelligence and the End of the Human Era - James Barrat Easy read that is pretty eye-popping on what's going on now, how AI may be developed, and why it's potentially so incredibly risky. Among other things, it details an experiment where a human pretending to be an AI manages to convince it's human "guards" to let it "out of the box." It almost always succeeds. Amazon Link

Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies - Nick Bostrom A bit more on the esoteric side, as you might expect from a Professor of Philosophy from Oxford. I'd go with the Our Final Invention first, but this is a good follow up that goes into more detail on both the technical means and the philosophy of how to program something smarter than us that won't kill us. Amazon link

That said, I don't worry about it too much. If superintelligence runs amok, there's really not much we will be able to do about it. Hope for the best, because that's really the only think non-internet genius billionaires/non-state actors/non-military technologists can do.

Single pilot will be viable in 5 years. The key will be legislating against it.

We won't see non pilot aircraft in our lifetimes.

This is a very interesting subject. A few weeks back someone posted a link to a "Seven Sisters" documentary. I viewed all 4. They were very thought provoking and pretty accurate with all they presented but they left out a lot, an awfully lot, that did not mesh with their point of view.

If you really want to be knowledgeable about oil and its history this is a must read:

The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money & Power by Daniel Yergin | 9781439110126 | Paperback | Barnes & Noble

The only way to describe this book is awesome. It is not ideological but more historical/academic which I really liked. It is basically a world history of energy/politics from the 1850's and although very long and detailed you will not want to put it down. A very enjoyable read.

If you want to be knowledgeable about oil/energy this is a great place to start.

Scoop

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll add that one to the list of books to read.
