On the first attempt we were seeing 28 to 35 direct crosswind component, limit on the 757 was 29, we went around. Next attempt it was 25-29, we landed.

All the fat fingering on some crosswind chart ahead of time is great for planning, but I want to know the actual crosswind from the IRU's/FMS, not what the ATIS or Tower is calling it. Progress Page 2 will tell you all you need to know, other than surface condition.... which also changes minute by minute.

Great Gouge.

Love the way Delta handles the fallen soldiers. Makes me proud! As an aside, does anybody know why one of the pilots in this video (2:30) appears to work for American (silver stripes instead of gold)?

Watch: Delta Airlines bag handlers pay tribute to a fallen soldier ? and his faithful canine companion - BizPac Review

Most likely a deadheading pilot that chose to walk down there to pay his respects.

That video should be taken down though, I don't think someone should be profiting off the death of a solider.

Me neither, but such is our depravity, and not exclusively (nor most heinously) through the monetization of videos.

Now, get off my lawn.

Ask away, Mike. All of us were new guys once. The new company/new airplane/new commute/new contract/new culture stuff isn't always a lot of fun.

You might want to keep the ALPA committee corner in mind for technical/contract questions that don't need an immediate response, and keep the 800-USA-ALPA number at hand for things that need a personal explanation. While most everyone here tries hard, there's a lot of incorrect information put out in this electronic "water cooler."

Better to ask the experts than learn the hard way.

Thanks, and sorry you had to suffer a stupid attack from the playground bully. He's on my ignore list with the likes of Snarge, good company he keeps. Of course I had to see him quoted 5 times so I usually see his shenanigans anyway.

I've called ALPA a few times and have found them to be an excellent resource. I haven't been around long enough to have experienced contract negotiations (which obviously is the most important part of the union) so I just stay out of the way of all those discussions and the ALPA love/hate that entails, but as far as helping out new guys with contract, scheduling, and PBS questions I have been mostly impressed with their act.

Somebody else mentioned my mentor. Some are good, some try really hard but don't quite get the job done. I've found this forum to be far more effective than my mentor, to the point where I just don't use him anymore. Nice guy and doing a lot of extra work on his own time, but hasn't been able to answer most of my questions in a correct or timely manner. In addition, I have received a LOT of feedback from some of the lurkers in the forum that they had similar questions but didn't ask or didn't even realize they had a question but learned from the answers to my questions. While I'm not some crusader out trying to selflessly do good for others, I do believe there is value in shared knowledge in an open forum vice a closed message between a mentor and new hire.

Big Mike!! I hope all is well. Dont fall for any traps. If I were you, I would take information from both sides and come up to your own conclusions after you have done research. Both sides exaggerate and bully each other. I have found both sides speak the truth and both sides BS and Spin the truth.

You are too new to isolate and shut off any pertinent messages (checks and balances)
.
Good luck, bro.

I doubt if anyone actually intentionally gives out bad gouge, but the contract changes every 3 years (or more often with all the T/A's) so what was once accurate is now no longer true.

Whenever I have a contractual question I always call DALPA and ask for Contract Admin. Go to the source for the most up to date, accurate info. That's why you pay dues.

Sucks for you if it's on a Saturday morning and you have to wait until Monday for an answer, but you can also get ahold of your LEC rep any day of the week if you can't get anyone in the office.

Quick Surface question. I've been off for a while on vacation and having an issue charging the keyboard. Tablet battery level is 100% and Keyboard is 0%. I charged the Surface all night and had the unit Off. Keyboard works fine and even detached/re attached. I didn't know if I missed something as it worked fine on my last trip. Thanks
