Finally, I see where Delta has cancelled the retrofit of the latest Multiscan Radar into the 737 fleet. The new aircraft (and the new 321's) will come delivered with it, but the plans to retrofit are scrapped. I wonder if they'll be rethinking that now that we've had two major incidents with severe thunderstorm penetration. That new radar set is designed to warn of exactly this sort of threat. We were lucky on this one.

For those of you not familiar with the new radar technology:

There is a picture somewhere out there that shows their flight track overlayed on a radar picture. Looks like they were well clear of the weather based on that shot.....not sure if it is accurate though. The 747 that got hit with hail was also well clear of the weather. Be good to get detailed info on both of these flights.

That had to be a fun approach with those windshields!

Wonder if they were on the downwind side, if so how many miles. WXR2100 multiscan is an awesome radar.

Looking at the Flight Aware track, seemed like they remained well clear of the red and yellow stuff. Purrdddyyyy scary when Hail travels That far

Separate from this event, but it brings up an interesting topic. Two guys with different ways to "skin the cat". One of the most effective examples of CRM I've heard was when I was a new hire. In CA's day one brief he said "when it comes to WX and comfort level stuff, we'll always go with the most uncomfortable guy's call". Took the pressure off speaking up. And I never had to with him.

That radar plot was old. The stuff was there when they flew through it. I don't know why flight aware showed that but I saw the same thing and checked it against a nws source with a timestamp. It did blow up very quickly however. The new multiscan is designed for exactly that situation.

Well are there any more rivers left in California?

These are not the times to be skimping on much needed reinvestment and "going on the cheap" for anything safety or infrastructure related. Everything like this should be done and paid for before dollar one of peak value share buybacks happens.

Any recommendations on a DTW commuter hotel for 1 night?

The clarion was pretty cheap...$50 out the door. It's not the greatest place, but the price was decent. If I only needed one night I would usually priceline a hotel with a name your own price of $45.00. I've gotten the Embassy Suites and Marriott for $55.00 before. I don't mind paying an extra $10 for the Embassy Suites. If you really like convenience and are willing to pay for it, the Westin right at the airport gives us a rate of $105-110 a night I think.
