Like Marcal said, bid what you want. I'm not totally sure how long they stay open as "vacancies" after posted, but there were dozens of unfilled spots on the ER and 73 system wide from the previous couple bids that arent reflected on this published list and that havent really been assigned to newhires either. For example- if you look at the vacancies posted in the 73 in SEA, SLC, and LAX there were dozens of unfilled FO spots over the last 2 bids, and only a handful of them have gone to newhires. I have no idea whether they will let guys into those prior vacancies or not, but it can't hurt to try.

They don't need to post openings for a position to open up through attrition. ATL 7ErB is a huge catagory. This bid has 200 Captain openings and 100 surpluses that are senior to most 7ERB pilots so 100 extra A openings after displacements will absolutely cause some ATL 7ERB's to bid off to Captain. The question that can't be answered is how many guys will leave, and then how many the company chooses to back fill. We aren't as short as DTW or NYC, but we aren't exactly fat on pilots either so I'd say some backfilling will occur. Put the bid in if that's what you want and cross your fingers. Good luck! I hope it works out for you.

Thanks Scambo,

Guess we'll see how many of those guys are west coasties. I'll probably end up with what I THOUGHT I'd get last AE:o

I'm not all that upset actually, commuting to reserve in LAX would probably be mucho expensive:eek:

I'm treading in the pool here.

What's the general take on the AE? Where are the openings and displacements?

There were 200 new Captains positions and 210 copilot positions.
There were 40 displacements for 747 Captains and 60 for FO's.
Net gain of 310 positions. It also appears the 747 has a increase in time in service. They had planned to have them all parked by 2017. Now they plan to fly 7 airframes through 2017.
It's a strong bid going into the winter flying. Hopefully bodes well for those in the pool.

This AE is mostly about the displacements from the 744. But it is a 4:1 ratio. There are some categories not showing openings, in which there will be unexpected openings.

I think some of your answer is unknowable without knowing from where every displacement eligible 744 pilot commutes.

FTB's grossly oversized picture makes my post microfiche.

Anyway, bid what you want, want what you bid is always correct.

Fail on FTB for posting a picture twice as wide as my screen. Underboob will cure your infraction.

Talked with some FA's on that flight. Scariest ride ever. Also said the right engine got hit by lightning, fire warning, etc., but not sure if that's true. Anyway, is there any good reason to fly through a thunderstorm? Aside from the pilots, what was the dispatcher's role in this?

Finally, I see where Delta has cancelled the retrofit of the latest Multiscan Radar into the 737 fleet. The new aircraft (and the new 321's) will come delivered with it, but the plans to retrofit are scrapped. I wonder if they'll be rethinking that now that we've had two major incidents with severe thunderstorm penetration. That new radar set is designed to warn of exactly this sort of threat. We were lucky on this one.

For those of you not familiar with the new radar technology:
