Sitting short call from across the U.S. is baaaaddd mmmkayyyy. If you're on short call, be within a "reasonable amount of time distance," whatever that means for your locale. Being out of position after trying and failing to make the commute is one thing. Out right now showing up is just going to make it tougher on the rest of us who do the right thing. People complain about the amount of SCs they have per day...this stuff doesn't help that cause.

No question there, but that wasn't the gist of the post. Just wondering aloud if these were probationary guys, senior guys who can no longer give a crap or what. Just seems odd/weird for 4 pilots on this one issue alone to get the boot.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they were 747 guys.

Ah gotya. One was a 330A. That's from a FB post by a friend of one of the guys who was fired.

From what I heard, a 747 from ATL-NRT (?) had a medical emergency and diverted into DTW. The crew timed out and they started calling out SC reserves. I guess after a few SC guys were contacted and sick all of a sudden, Scheduling got suspicious. They had to make a lot of calls before crewing the new flight. It's a shame.

There was far more than one flight that caused the companies actions. If you get caught up in not being where you are supposed to be the company is going to ask where you were on previous short calls and verify that information.

Are there any DTW 777 departures? I think a lot of these guys figure if they get SCed it will be a DH somewhere to operate so they sit at home.

I've heard a lot of the 747 SC guys head home an hour or so after the last departure.

There in lies the problem. Just a few weeks ago a DTW-ICN flight returned to DTW after about an hour enroute for some problem. The 777 ATL-ICN goes right by DTW on the way to Narita, and the ATL-ICN goes over DTW usually.

All of these could drop into DTW for a problem (hey, they have a MX base, and we can recrew the plane!)

I have personally talked to a 777 guy that was headed home to San Diego after he sat a few hours of SC. "The flight left, nothing left to do"

I figure they are paying me to be available on reserve, long or short call. If you don't like sitting SC in a base far from where you live, don't bid reserve or bid down to an airplane where you can hold a line. Unless you're been with the company less than a year, sitting reserve is your own choice.

Yeah I'm wondering if these 4 had a history of not showing up when they were supposed to and it was later proven. Having previously been in a position to hire & fire folks (thankfully only had to fire one) it takes a lot at most places to lose your job. Usually a combination of bad attitude and repeated history of slacking will do it. Too bad, silly thing to throw away a career for.
