Seems like that should be a reasonable wag for reserve driving distance as well, considering somebody had that distance in mind to determine what's "close enough" to justify in-range for a household location. One example would be KATL to Chatanooga, which in reasonable traffic would be under two hours. But throw in peak drive time, then not so much. The San Diego to KLAX example represents the sub 120 mile commute that would be under two hours only with a lot of good timing and good luck. I did the 49 miles from Universal Studios Hollywood to KSNA in about 1:45 during afternoon rush; SoCal is the epitome of "that ain't gonna work" when it comes to assuming a mile per minute across the earth. Trains and planes can be an equalizer, but reserve distance to the airport is a personal choice depending on your location and willingness to push boundaries. Not sure what the knock regarding Vegas was? I'd place money on me at my home in Vegas against any SoCal boys (or girls or gender neutrals) living outside of a 60 mile circle around LAX for a race to the crew lounge in daylight hours. My record - 1:10 from my master bedroom pillow to check-in. Granted, the stars aligned for that, but two hours is no sweat. Short call at the gym or Starbucks next to KLAS if the risk justifies.

The knock was that it’s been past practice that it’s surface transportation. This is defined by the requirement to be in the general location of the base.

For your convenience, here’s a Crowflight calculator: :D

As a point of reference, our very own PWA provides relocation benefits as a result of an MD or VD stating: "...actually moves his household goods and personal effects to a new permanent residence that is within a 125 straight-line statute mile radius of the airfield reference point at his new base".

If you're a junior pilot and have been MD'd and now have to relocate/sit reserve in a new base (eg LAX), and the company will pay relocation expenses to within 125 miles, why is 110 at the outer limit of reasonable?

I don’t think the two issues are related in any way. Years ago we did not have a distance for moving. Guys would bid or displace into a closing category and use the paid move to go further away than their original residence. The 125 was simply a negotiated distance the company wanted to stop the above practice. It has nothing to do with reserve.

I understand the need to curb the described practice. However, if the company has agreed to a distance of 125 miles as "close enough" to their new base for relocation reimbursement purposes, why is the same 125 miles or 110 miles too far away for sitting reserve and "reporting promptly" purposes?

I see no reason the two issues are related. One is based on time and one is based on straight line distance. They are completely different sections of the contract. They don’t relate. There are lots of places where you can live within 125 straight line miles but the normal drive time could be 5 hours. This issue has been through the discipline process many times. There is nothing to sea lawyer here.
We have a very liberal short call policy that is enforced with a reasonable man outlook. Let’s not screw it up.

Sage advice.

1400 EDT 5/29. Anyone having issues with Deltanet and/or Travelnet? I can't seem to log on to Travelnet, but Deltanet seems back up now.

I intermittently have issues with internet explorer, but if I use Chrome it will work fine, I'm presuming it's an IT issue.
