ACL, could we staff a GUM base with 12 day trips from current bases like LAX and ATL?

DAL sees that as a costly short term solution that may be used if they do not think it will be a long standing op.

Ya know Ferd, I was told that, and then talking with a few guys last week they seemed to "Know" that they would be staying there. They work over there and thought that this 73N flying was add-on flying.

In the end it is anyone's guess, but I just wanted to point out that there was a differing voice on this.

Sure hope that is how it works out.....I'm basing my AE/MD bid on it, ie staying in MSP for the time being.

With this being the start of the storm, I would not AE anything unless it is where you want to be not matter what happens.

So I guess a short term solution to GUM that would allow fluidity would of course be 12 day state side trips possibly augmented by a very small GUM base?

And let me ask this, I haven't paid attention to the 755 category but is the plan still to have 76ERs in MSP and DTW flying to Asia and then the crews flying 757s while there? Thus no deadheading.

Without information, other than ACL's, how do we do that? A guy who bids a 737 could be in Asia. The ER pilot who bids to go to Asia will just as likely be doing overnights in Fort Lauderdale.

Of course, there is only one way to get the Jackson Mississippi overnights. That's where I'm headed.

I understand that is the "goal". But, most of us think there is still too much south flying to have non-deadheads cover it. I think, if they are able to do it, it would result in shorter (6 maybe 9?) day trips. Also, I forget but isn't there a 35 in 7 rule for international? So no long trip with a PDX > NRT > BKK > NRT > PDX in it somewhere.

Bar, and that is the way it is designed. We do not know what base will be doing the flying one month to the next. It happens on a day to day basis on some flights. They will have the base that has the staffing and who can do it most efficiently do a given flight. Computers has made it so that they can change this on a day to day basis. I do not think that we could get certain bases to do certain flights.

I like Saipan for the beautiful island, the history (big WWII battle field) and everyplace I like to eat and drink is within walking distance. Not so much Guam. Plus, it's the closest place and it used to have the longest layovers (but not now, maybe it will go back if we get the increased service back).

Other Saipan stuff I'll leave to PMs:eek::D

Ferd

PS May be all a moot point if the 737s come out with or without a Guam base.

Saipan is waaay cheaper than Guam, too. At least it was when I was doing that stuff. (It was my favorite flying at NWA) :)

What does this talk of a GUM base mean vis-a-vis the JAL deal. Thought this was the backup plan if we couldn't lure JAL away.

Last I saw from the Japanese newspapers was JAL was going to side with us so would that mean we're going to expand further into Asia.

newKnow 12-27-2009 07:51 AM

ACL,

So you are saying that if they do Guam, it's still up in the air whether or not there is going to be a real base in Guam (As in we can bid GUM 73N A or B) or if mainline bases will be taking temporary duty there, or mainline bases flying 12 day trips and DH'ing to get there?

Does the union have to sign off on any of the above options?
