Question - I noticed especially with the DC9 that is seems that is a direct competition to Airtrans aircraft and routes. What is going to happen when all 100 seat aircraft are gone (DC9 30-40) by the end of the year? Are regional jets going to replace these routes or are some of the md90's you have going to be placed on them? Do those DC 9's really have to be retired at this point? There are WAY to many regional jets in DCI, I think its around 700+?

I think Delta is the only company I've worked for that doesn't have intercoms. Night and day for crew comm. can't believe someone hasn't pushed this at some point in time, especially with the 737 fleet.

those DC9s DO NOT HAVE TO be retired, it is just a decision from Delta. They have some more flying left in them if they wanted them to. They just dont want to spend the money upgrading and painting them imho.

The MD88 has an intercomm. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you.

At the end of 2009 the total DCI fleet was 686 aircraft, of which 647 were RJ's (153 76 seat, 66 70 seat, and 428 50 seat). Managment has stated that another 50 RJ's (50 seaters) will be removed from the system this year, plus they are parking the Saabs as they come off lease over the next couple of years (39 remaining aircraft). |
I don't understand why you would want hot mic or why it is even a necessity? I don't want to hear other noises (coughing, cackling, background noise) in my headset -- or the speaker.

Much Much easier to communicate with less fatigue due to ambient noise imo. Im amazed at how many folks don't like this idea. And yet, as pilots get into their 40's they're surprised to find they can't hear like they used to? Even some of the "quiet" 88 cockpits are very noisy in the 20's imo. |

If your having a conversation you can leave it on, if not you can turn it off. |
I'm very familiar with hot mics -- all my other aircraft had them. And if you used it, everyone yelled at you (non-Dave Clark cockpits).
I just think it's ridiculous that even the newest Boeings being built are loud. |
