Yes, planes are full, and will be fuller this summer. Just flew the last six of seven and I only had one flight where we had a seat open. It was just one, and it was way early. |

The funding goes into all the defined benefit pension plans that exist at Delta. At Delta South, the non-contract plan (which included DAL management) was hard frozen, just like all the north plans. All of those plans were(are) significantly underfunded but survived bankruptcy due to the passage of pension reform legislation in 2006. The only pension plan terminated has been the south pilot plans (approved 9/2/06 by the bankruptcy court and accepted 12/31/06 by PBGC). The non-contract (read management) non-qualified plan was rejected during the bankruptcy, so there are no pre-petition non-qualified benefits payable. In addition to Delta funding the pension benefit your wife actually earned, she currently receives a 2% company contribution to her 401K. She also is eligible for company 401K matching contributions of up to 5%, for a total 7% DC. As a historian, I must remind you that their pensions were underfunded and about a year ago, rumor had it that they were going to terminate their pensions just like they did ours. This recent news is actually good news. At least the pensions they have may live on for awhile. By the way, I think you missed a couple of my pension posts. |

Speaking of pensions, so much for the benefits of some government pensions:
NYT (today): An independent analysis of California’s three big pension funds has found a hidden shortfall of more than half a trillion dollars, several times the amount reported by the funds and more than six times the value of the state’s outstanding bonds. Still the best pension, I think if you serve in congress 7 years then you get your salary for the rest of your life, which is around $170K right now. Maybe we should all run for congress. |
Someone once told me that SWA's pilots had to fly in the Rose mode and could not use map mode because not all of their cockpits had FMS. Any truth to this?

The 717 cockpit is essentially the MD-11, including the FMS, grafted on to a DC-9. 717 would be a great bird...too bad there aren't any available. 118 including a decent business class. FWIW, all of the FNWA 757s run the Pegasus software, some just don't have GPS. But they all have been modded for the center fuel tank (run them to zero), and they all have the "smart bleed" mod on the APU. Nu |

The biggest difference was it also had the AOA, and smaller numbers on the tape. |
