You need to get in line for the rebuttal to this statement. Ha Like a few others here, I guess you ignored my other posts on the pension issue and singled out this one. I never said their pensions were terminated. At least I don't think I did. Several of my posts were meant as sarcasim as well. I guess fried was the wrong term to use. Forozen and changed would have been more appropriate. I would have to check, but I think your statement I have placed in bold letters is not exactly correct. Like us, my wife was issued Preferred and Common ESOP stock as part of her retirement package. The Preferred was issued on an average of between $75 and $80 plus. Until retirement, this stock was unusable and untransferable. When selling this $80 stock, it first had to be converted to Common at a ratio of 1.171 (close). Before and during BK, Common became almost worthless, and the preferred quickly followed. We were finally given the opportunity to sell this stock for about one tenth of what DAL issued it for. I honestly can't remember what the prior value of mine was, but I think it was around $30 to $40k. I think I got around $365 for it. How's that for a company match? Although my wife's wasn't anywhere near that much, she took the same sort of hit that we did with the stock. So to say they didn't lose a dime, well, I'm not so sure that is accurate. But yes, just like one of my first posts on the subject, I stated she still has a pension, it's just a teeny tiny one. Ha Years ago, a friend of mine and I were advocating getting our pensions in our own names. We would tell crew members we were flying with (and DALPA) that allowing DAL to manage our pension money was like letting the wolves guard the food pile. The response we normally got was, "Delta would never terminate our pensions, so I don't see what you are so worried about." Questions? |

It's our own fault. ALPA should have shut the ENTIRE industry down when the US Airways pilots lost their pensions. They should have did it again when the United pilots were on the verge of losing their pensions. Instead, the Delta and NWA pilots just watched and were thankful they still had their pensions. We stood around and watched pensions that were already earned get terminated one by one. We deserved what was coming to us. We can't stand up for ourselves. We are scared to death of the RLA and other laws. I guess that's where the "organization" comes into play. Other unions go on illegal strikes without blinking when they need to. I'm referring to transit workers.
One of my next door neighbors WAS a USAir pilot at that time. We had that same discussion. Although I never really expected it to hit DAL, my thoughts were exactly as you say. When those guys lost their pensions, ALPA National should have just taken a stand and said, "You want to mess with us, then we are going to have a National work stoppage until you regain your sanity. Let us know how that turns out for you." I knew when they were screwing with UAL pensions that we were in big trouble. I still wonder how long the AMR guys will be able to hang on. |

After reading sailings post, I admit that I didn't even know that DAL S FA's had pensions. However, I knew that similarly US Air terminated their pilots pensions but kept their FA's plans in tact. Does anyone know if UAL FA's still have theirs - normal funding or frozen?
Why does everyone think we still have 90 year old flight attendants? They can't afford to quit. Remember this one? DAL ER taxiing in to Frankfurt gate. Luftansa crew on ground says in a heavy German accent, "DAL 123, welcome to Germany, did you bring your Grandmothers with you? :D |

I think the AA guys are in better shape than we were. It's not my area, and I defer to Sailing, but I thought the Pension Protection Act, required more disclosure and more protection for employees. Of course, nothing is fool proof. :D |

That's because their pensions are so worthless, they don't even talk about them. They also make it very difficult for them to figure out what their pensions truly are. Very obfuscated.

This next is all in good fun!:) But I think you ment to say "fool" didn't you?!?!:D That's what it would need to be if I was involved!!! Denny DOH!!! Waves you beat me to it!!! |
I may take some flak for this one (what's new :D), BUT, I'd bet the Mechanics have much more of a pension than the FA's due to their much higher salaries, even though their hiring criteria was less than that of an FA. Yes you heard that right. First of all, mechs are not required to have a minimum of a 4 year degree as our FA's were in the past (not sure about now). Albeit most Mechs had previous experience, Mechanics were not required to possess an A&P to get hired and most of them still don't have one. I beleive all the line guys must have an A&P, but not the guys working in the maintenance and tech ops areas. How do I know, becasue I ARE one. Ha :) I am an A&P with an IA endorsement. A good friend of mine was a DAL Mechanic for years. Of course I will admit he had a B.S. degree in Avionics and a masters degree in business, and came with military experience; however, he was the exception and not the rule. He quickly moved to become the FMS data analyst and is now a dispatcher. Morale of that story, I guess my wife should have been a DAL Mechanic.

Denny DOH!!! Waves you beat me to it!!! Good to be back. The "exam" is in July. I just have to scrounge up some money to get the study course and take the thing. It's not cheap. I just checked and I guess I did mean to say fool. What's funny is that I've been using it wrong for my entire life. That just goes to show you, I'm never too old to learn something. :D |
Ok. Acl just threw me for a loop. He changed it for me! I guess he was trying to protect me from myself.
IF only he could have been around when I proposed to my first wife..... :D |
