One thing that hurts hockey is the season lasts 15 months I think. I think they're in preseason warmups as two teams play for the cup. However, hockey was very interesting in the Olympics with Canada vs USA, I think what helped was it was a tournament. I'd rather see a tournament based not on the body of work in the playoffs (as in a best of 7) but on one single game.

As to soccer, the one thing I don't care for is the clock. When the big board says 0, the game ought to be over. It shouldn't be a mystery as to when it will end. Americans don't trust the referee to be impartial because frankly, everything is for sale. Source: Illinois. But what if a team is about to score for the tie or the win and the ref calls the game over to preserve the win for the other team? Seems fishy.

Another referee can run the clock from up high as easily as on the field and 0 needs to mean 0. Imagine the Boise St and OU Fiesta Bowl with an ambigious clock? It wouldn't be the same.

Just don't ever make the mistake of asking one of them to explain Cricket... that takes a very long time and a whole lot of booze.

You could've shown them you're one of "them" by pulling this soccer/football stunt:

Yep, I went there.

80,

I was an Iron Man fan before you were born and the first Iron Man was excellent and the second one sucked - that's just the way it is. And, Hockey is the #1 spectator sport (if you've never been then go), lacrosse is way up there on the physical scale (I played in college) and never could get into Futbol/soccer.

Remember a few years ago when Fox put an electronic "blue streak" on the puck so people could follow it on TV.
That only made it worse. Hockey sucked on TV.

Not so much anymore though.
I've started watching a lot more hockey since I got HDTV.
High-def is a godsend for the NHL.
Not just the better resolution but also the 16x9 aspect ratio "widescreen" really helps hockey.
I'm enjoying the Stanley Cup playoffs big time this year.

Atomic won't let me quote and post so let me echo what jdmj said. I've played all three kinds of football and rugby is by far the toughest and most physically demanding of the three. It is also the most fun to play. If you've ever been to a rugby party you know what I mean.

Flopping and diving in futball is a major problem and needs to be addressed by FIFA. It really detracts from the game. The English game much rougher than other European versions.

Football is probably the most mentally challenging in certain positions. I doubt Peyton Manning would last 5 minutes on a rugby pitch. Conversely I don't think your average fly half could make it as an NFL QB either. The complexity of the game at that level is unmatched.

I've become bored with football because it just takes too darn long. Who has three or four hours to sit and watch a game. Futball is 90 min give or take a few for added time. Sure they may not be a lot of scoring but it has the drama of good literature in leading up to that single goal. It's ay more exciting than baseball.

Soccer/football will become more popular here when kids realize how much money there is to be made vs football and basketball. World footballers make NFL players look like pikers when it comes to paychecks
